Can one of you guys run your finger on the inside of your exhaust tip and describe what you see? Please post your mileage too. Please be honest, I am trying to diagnose something. Thanks ahead!

    Edit: Poll added.

Here's what is going on... I noticed my 2014 inner exhaust tip is very black at 55,000. I look at the inner exhaust tip on my 2003 with 250,000 on the roller and it is clean, clean, clean. I realize these are two entirely different engines, but I am curious if it normal for the 4.0 V6.

My 2013 exhaust tip always seems to have some soot in it, and I clean the exhaust tip every time I wash the truck. I'm at 37k

See, and this is where I am getting confused.

My engine has the 4.0 knock upon cold start, but it is not in the bottom end, in other words, it is not a deep knock that would be caused by something more serious. It sounds like it is running super lean upon cold startup.

Personally never heard this "4.0 knock upon cold start".
    Is this a thing now?

I have heard a few others mention it, so I am not too sure how common it is. No check engine light. No camera either. Just bought my first digital camera though :D

Black and 104k. You may want to drive it longer to burn hotter and burn the bad out of it

A few additions to make me feel cool.
My 2011 has always been covered in soot. Has 55k on it and drives me crazy. My 07 ran clean, depends on the truck I guess.

Thank you all for checking on this, and for your input. I guess I know where my 1/2 quart of oil is going every 5,000 miles. I hope this doesn't plug up the catalytic converters or foul the o2 sensors, at least not before the 250,000 miles that I am shooting for.
