My tranny shifts ok since I got in it. I do notice little lag driving around 40 when it wants to get in 6th. I just hold it in 5th. Tell you what I do like when I pulled it in garage about 45 minutes ago. Turned ignition off it showed 24.8 mpg.

Yeah, I'm actually a pretty big fan of the AT myself.

It took some getting used to at first, but once I did there's so much you can do with it! S-mode helps a ton up in the mountains. I-70 is notoriously steep for maintaining highway speeds, my first-gen (2.7) had a hard time holding even 55mph at the top. My 2016 has no issue with the drive at all, and if I keep it in S4 the hunting goes away completely.

I agree that the complaints about power are more mod-related than anything else. I noticed a drop in MPGs once I added 140# worth of sliders and E rated KO2s, so I can only imagine how it would be fully armored with larger tires.

I think people are learning the computer. The COMPUTER portion of it causes the "issues". Keep in mind this truck is as fast as the 1st generation Ford Raptor. Let that sink in, I needed it to.

Normal mode is conservation mode. ECT is fun mode. 4hi and 4lo are go wild and post to the forums, just don't complain too much when you find scratches under the dirt (guilty).

Mine actually feels like it shifts better after going to 265/70/17s seems like it doesn’t hunt around as much. Maybe I’m just crazy. I’ve got some armor and extra weight as well.

Yeah, I could see how that might be. With more weight, you are going to be further into the throttle at any given speed, which we know this truck likes. I’m on the verge of getting some more armor and a bumper, and a rack. I’ll be interested to see the difference.

I really like the way it feels now going to a stronger tire. Between the stock tires and suspension everything felt way to squishy to me for a truck. Next will be a full OME setup with Dakar’s.

typical lift, 32's blacked out, intake, exhaust, sprint booster, doug thorleys,, good truck, but since gone...
Not sure about you guys but I held off on the tacoma due to the shifting up and down crap, and having to use the ect to fix the issue, etc. Now the warm fuzzy is to wait 10k miles and all is fixed? Really? Seems ridiculous to me to have to wait and hope. I test drove many and one with a lift and larger tires and it was a dog,, went down an everyday freeway in Az here and it had to down shift everytime the freeway just dipped 10-15ft then gradually rose back up to level. I just couldnt do it then and knew this lack of power, and shifting games would drive me nuts. Sucks cause Ive always been a Taco guy but after passing for months, im seriously considering a zr2 or canyon, due to the HP and smoothed out trans issues in the 18's. Is there any hope for a better engine and tran combo in the future for Tacos?

Glad I found the 3rd gen AT support group. Been feeling like an outsider reading all the negative threads about this. Never had major beef with it but After 3-4K miles feels like second nature, always have it in 4 or 5 around town and only utilize double overdrive on the highway

The 18 is nearing 2400 miles and I am super stoked on the performance and the efficiency of the drivetrain that is getting better and better. The truck is driving like a dream. No more odd deals. It launches fairly strong without flooring it, goes through the gears smoothly, stealthy and quick to respond at freeway speeds, and the best part, pressing on the gas to go faster while cruising and the truck actually going somewhere with good pace. All without having to floor it and without a downshift occurring. Awesome feeling.

Lots of 3rd Gen threads on how to solve supposed gear hunting. Look them up. Otherwise good luck with the GM.

You mean, reflashes, resets, updates, ect button games? Then you get a fun howl to tackle? I just feel you shouldn't have to go through all of this on a brand new 40k truck

FWIW, like most manufacturers, Toyota is under the gun to make their products as efficient as possible. I wouldn't be surprised if the Tacomas and Tundras dont start coming with 10 speed transmissions or CVTs in the future. A buddy of mine just bought a 2018 F150 and his came with a 10 speed. He said it shifts....a lot.

I have experienced the gear hunting and early shifting in the Taco, and it can be a PITA, but as others have mentioned, if you get on the pedal it snaps to attention. ECT helps as well. I look at it as kind of a compromise; you're more or less trading some responsiveness for MPG in normal mode. After I averaged 24.6 MPG on a road trip with upsized tires and 70 mph, I think of it more as a minor inconvenience now.
