That's what we were thinking. That we didn't put them in right. Possibly we pressed it in to tight I'm thinking.

 

I'm no expert, but my understanding is that tightness is generally because you can't get your c-clamp pushing perfectly on-axis.

So as long as it was just far in enough to put the retaining clip in, it might still feel tight but it's only because the cap is just a hair cockeyed. Banging on the flange with a hammer lets it rattle its way out into being "level" otherwise you are grinding the shit out of your bearings and may have already cooked them.
