People just get used to it. IMO, it's really never been a big deal. People just expect V8 power out of a small engine.

Its not the size of the engine or the power it's where it's made at. If people could hold 6th or even 5th on rolling hills it wouldnt be a problem. The fact it likes to drop to 4th while doing 60+ is annoying. Have I gotten accustom to it? Yes i have but with that being said the power delivery in conjunction with the over drive gearing will drive some nuts.

I feel exactly the same way. Just took a road trip in our other vehicle. The same stretch of road it would shift to 5 when needed. Mostly just cruises along. Probably 5 shifts the whole way. I tried counting the shifts the Tacoma made once but got tired after 50 in just as many miles. The transmission never bothers me around town.

I am still waiting for some Tacoma wold genius to have a plug a play that makes S mode a paddle shifter rather than a limiter! Shift sense pro style.

I wish! When my Jeep died and I need a new vehicle there were none on the lot! I could have planned it better, you live and you learn.

Yeah, i'm at almost 11k now, and mine still likes to shift at @1900rpm when i'm just trying to drive normally. i've just learned to use the ECT more often, and the shifting is more like how i used to shift when i drove manual. When it gets to a good cruising speed, turn it back off. It is a bit herky jerky when you're on ECT under 30mph in the city or in traffic. gets annoying sometimes to stay on ECT in traffic, much more if you have passengers and you see their heads tossing back and forth out of the corner of your eye like a rag doll, yet they don't say anything.

    OUCH!
    My Rubicon with 35's km2's gets 12.4.
Tacoma with 33's is just as bad apparently.
What sucks I want this shifting issue to not exist so bad to grab a tacoma, just hesitant cause for every one that says it's fine, fixed itself, etc.
There is a person that confirms my fears of the stories of 50+ shifts in a trip, constant ECT button hitting . Smh. I'm sighing now
Love the look of these, especially lifted and tires, which I would do, but toyota isn't helping and it's pushing me towards the gm sisters and the 300+hp 8speed trans. It also has after market sc options 400+, and getting ready for refresh in 2019.. c'mon toyota get it together..

    No shifting issues here.
It took me a while to get used to the tacoma downshift on steep hills.
I like it now which means less braking.
Very happy! Just shitty has mileage. No biggie.

I wonder if it’s actually just the driver adjusting to the transmission, and not the other way around? :D:thumbsup: #twilightzone

I drove a lifted new one with 33s and it was shifting non stop just going down a normal city freeway, and I definitely had little confidence about switching lanes cause I'd step on it and it seemed like nobody was home but when it did start to downshift and gain power it was too late to even switch lanes st that point. It was frustrating to say the least. But I wondered how much of this issue is do to weight increase from larger tires, etc.
I drove a regular non lifted one and the power was meh, but mountain travels over to California from az are my fear.

Mine has 30k. Love it and have done some badass multi-state trips through all sort of terrain. Only last week did I get the OVTune (running 87 tune) and it was worth it. I didn’t notice much of the issues people spoke of besides the driveline vibe, but that was because I put an OME lift on with slightly bigger tires. The tune makes the truck feel 800-1000 lbs lighter and shifting is awesome. Power is better and so is maintaining good mpg. I’m glad I chose the automatic, I have had no issues.

Check out OVTune. You will never go back and you will have unleashed the true nature of the Lexus engine in these 3rd gen trucks. The tune is worth every penny and simplifies the tuning maps from the stock garbage Toyota put in there...and you will get better mpg

So, wait 10k miles to like a 35k truck that should not suck in the first place? Seem legit.

I have 32” tires and average 17-20 on my way to work thru traffic.

Ive read alot of complaints as well and have never really had any shifting issues. I get that the gears arent the greatest but never really bothered me that much. Maybe its me but mine drives great. I did add shift booster for throttle lag and i am thoroughly satisfied. I want to up to ovtune but i really dont have a prob with the way it drives now even with 32” tires and lift. 11.5kmiles And i dont really believe in this tranny learning curve. Drives thevsame since i got it

That's s huge part. I've driven 2nd gens that the Air Force gave me to use for work a couple times. So much happier that I own a 3rd Gen lol. It's night and day. I am just use to the way it drives.

For those who are trying to decide on whether to purchase an automatic 3rd gen Tacoma, if you like paddle shifters, S mode on the Tacoma can be operated in a similar way.

Not only does it limit the transmission to the gear of your choice, it can be shifted up and down with the lever. + and -

Shift it down from S4 to 3rd, 2nd and then into 1st individually and arrive at a stop light. Starting off in 1st gear, it will hold each gear until you shift it up, or down, from 1 to 6, or anywhere in between.

It’s a manual mode. Of course, without a clutch.

You choose the gear, RPM’s and speed of your truck if you so desire.

    Not bad for an automatic.

Mine started performing better after 1,000 miles. At under 3,000 miles it’s doing well.

During three test drives in different Tacomas, they all kind of sucked because they all felt underpowered.

I have no complaints regarding the power now. Perhaps I also just got used to it.

A few more horses and lower end torque never hurts any vehicle though!
