High Clearance Rear Bumper w/Swing Out. Regrets?

Anybody go thru the task of chopping your bed & install a HC rear bumper w/a swing out then regret it? I had a swingout on my FZJ80 & it became a pain in the ass.

 

I'm interested to see what people say. I'm looking at getting swingouts on my Tacoma and FZJ80. 35s don't fit many places on the 80s.

I've got this question too. Feeling nervous about doing the chop.

 

We just had this conversation in my build thread. What we agreed upon is that how you use your truck will determine if it’s right for you. With a swingout you don’t be able to drive with the tailgate down anymore for longer loads. Something to think about.

 

That's a good point that I hadn't even thought of! Looks like I'm out as I need to be able to do that w/a 5' bed.

 

Boom, there you go! The high clearance aspect is still great though. I think it looks really clean and love the departure angle. Really only makes sense if you wheel though

 

I do wheel so let me ask you this:
Have you ever, or how often, have you hit the area between the wheel well & where a regular off road bumper protects? I get the greater clearance, which is ALWAYS nice to have, but curious as to the area protected. Thanks.

 

I've only had mine mounted for a month and a half now, and haven't taken it on any serious wheeling trips yet, just a few more mild ones. One trip I went on though the guy in front of me went over a rock, and right down on that lower bed side. I saw it happen so I avoided it, but if I hadn't, the bumper would have protected me anyways. At that moment I was happy I went HC.

 

Only regret is can't have dirt bike back there AND the swing out on. So I don't usually have it on.

Your swing-out comes off easily? I guess you just remove the nut for the spindle? This may put it back into the realm of possibilities!

 

I have a mobtown one and it's just a giant bolt that holds it on. IIRC it's a 38mm for the top and a 32mm for the bottom. Would be damn near impossible to take off alone though as it weighs almost 60lbs without any extra accessories

I disliked mine on my LX450. It made it where I quit using the rear area.

 

I dont have a HC w/Swing out yet but will soon. I dont carry items longer than 5ft very often and will cross that bridge when it comes. I've damaged both sides of the bottom of my bedside that will be cut of when the HC arrives in the next couple of months.

 

Set that on the spindle and tighten that bolt. It’s pretty easy.

 

My plan if I ever need to haul anything remotely large is to just rent a trailer from home depot. Or maybe toss it up on top of the camper shell depending what it is
