High Clearance Rear Bumper w/Swing Out. Regrets?

Shit. Not what I wanted to hear!

 

I'll have to see if I like it or not, it's just a big investment. I don't usually haul anything that requires the back being opened.

 

I went the last 4 years w/out a truck & quite a few times it became a nuisance. I've had a truck for the 20 years before that and sure missed having a bed!

 

Oh yeah I have a harbor fright hitch carrier thing that no longer works with the way this hitch mounting hole is recessed on my high clearance. But I never really used that thing anyway. just throwing that out there. Also I’ve hit the bottom of my high clearance on rocks that made me glad it’s wasnt any lower.

 

Since you have a truck also, it won't be an issue for you. I went w/1 long swing-out & wish I did 2 shorts.

 

It's definitely handy!! Even semi large stuff it's nice having the truck for. I managed to fit four 34s in the bed with my drawer system

 

I was helping a friend move and didnt have room for his mattress and box springs in the bed with my midrack so I just through it all on top of the RTT and strapped it down tight. It worked and got it to his new place.

 

I like to push myself and my truck to far. I figured it was only a matter of time until i did damage to the bedside. I was hoping it would take longer than it did to damage the sides but it just encouraged to go HC sooner instead of a regular replacement. Part of me wishes I would have never discovered off road parks but everything around me is privately owned so no other safe legal place to go off road besides some boring dirt county roads.

 

Right now the spare is in the bed, but I have a shell on. I just plan on using the FJ80 for overlanding. The swingout may be good for mounting a folding table to.

 

I had the pelfrey built swingout. It was awesome for wheeling or big trips, but the swingout became a nuisance on day to day tasks. It made hauling things longer than the length of the bed nearly impossible, and was mostly an inconvenience for easy access items inside. I ended up removing the swing gate and remounting my spare under the truck.

 

i did mine about 2 weeks ago and i LOVE it. there are no regerts when i went wheeling 2 years ago i came off a drop where the HC would've been better and not damaged my truck bed. can't wait to go wheeling with the bumper. only regret is not doing it sooner.

 

I ended up backing into a big rock and damaged by original bumper, which pushed back into the bedside denting it and causing the paint to flake off. For me, the hc was the obvious choice to fix it. I definitely feel the extra weight back there, especially with a full sized spare hanging off the back. I just bumped up the pressure in my air bags and it was all good. Plus is looks cool!

 

how many of you guys with a swing out fit in a garage?

 

I don't use my truck to haul a much anymore so the swing out isn't a big deal. Having much better clearance and the ability to drag on anything is pretty cool. Taking an extra 15 seconds to open the tailgate isn't really a consideration for me. I can still haul 8 or 10 foot lumber in the back. Just not as much as without a swingout.

 

No regrets here - lumber goes around and over the rear tire/ assemblies... what's the worse case? Buy a replacement bedside panel (s)??

 

sucks when you need to open the tailgate...especially when you are parked parallel and in tight spaces

 

Yes. I sold mine after a year. I use my truck for actual hauling too often. Great for mallcrawling. Not so great for practicality.

 

No regrets here. Lumber goes around the spare or on the rack and I've yet to have an issue where I cannot get into the bed when I want to.

I've dragged it on things (far less often than I was dragging the factory receiver hitch) and when I'm on the street people are less likely to tailgate me now.

 

I use my truck more often for going on camping trips and offroad trips than hauling bigger items that warrants the tailgate being down or the swing out being removed. My days of needing to haul bigger items in the bed are behind me. With places like u-haul, it makes it easier to rent a trailer for a day than deal with taking items off the vehicle and putting them back on; especially if no other hands are available to help me. That said, if I needed to, I would purchase a trailer to use at my disposal.

 

I went with a dual swing out for the sole purpose of tighter spots when in the city. I had every intention of only using the swing outs when I actually went off roading but have since left it on. I have a daily now so that helps, but it does make for a pain when hauling stuff. I would have to take the spare off if I ever wanted to try to drive with the swingouts extended and tailgate down. I have a cap on my truck so in order to get into it I need to open the swing outs, which is time consuming but not bad at all.

I wonder if a 33" tire would fit in the back seat of my doublecab...
