So the place I hit today is a regular spot. Saw wah kee, Oswego, IL. Its an old quarry if I'm correct. Very hilly, technical riding. Lots of rocks, it dries up pretty quick because of that.

I built a new bike rack for my truck. The one I had before attached to the top rails and I had to leave the tailgate down when I drove. This new one attaches closer to the front of the bed and the bike fits inside now with a half inch to spare.

    20180325_103404.jpg
I beveled and welded the ends because I'm hopelessly OCD
    mount1.jpg
Used some stainless steel hardware in the bed for an attach point

    20180325_185646.jpg

Now I can keep other gear in the back without having to worry about it flying out of an open tailgate.

Yep KB Voodoo and I’m trying to reuse some Rockymounts, but there’s still and issue with how the rocky mounts attach to the trays. What I have here does not work:
    A69A4DFA-430C-482B-A89C-02C8030A24D3.jpg
Where the bike mount was attached to the front cross beam, I have to bolt it to the very front portion of the bike mount, and not to the wheel tray like I have it shown on the photo. The way I have it is not secure in the front. I have the voodoo cross beam bolted to the rocky mount wheel tray in both places, using the bolt track under the wheel tray. The front of the rocky mount where the fork is attached... that’s a separate piece. Because I don’t have it directly bolted to that piece, the mounted bike flexes back and forth quite a bit. This was the maiden voyage, and I didn’t even use it. Got to try to make it work. Thought no one would notice, now I got some splainen to do!:facepalm:

Mounting the cross bars directly to the fork part of the rocky mount is problematic. It’s so flush, that the tightening mechanism (the handle thing) lacks clearance and at best is inconvenient. So I have to think about a spacer or big ass washers. To eliminate flex, the rocky mounts must be installed flat, clean and tight. Still have not got it right. That’s the scoop man.

Chad, I need to post some follow up info maybe on your thread, cuz I still have some connection stuff to work out, see my response in this thread here. I think some folks were going to do the same thing and I don’t have it connected right yet.

Okay, the Voodoo crossbars are awesome, but it looks like the Rocky Mounts won’t work. It’s better but the mounting point up front still allows too much sway. When it’s mounted like it’s supposed to be normally on a rail, the mounting surface is wider so it resists the torsion.

That’s the first problem. The second is that the release clamp won’t turn when installed anywhere along the the voodoo rail. The only place it works is on the outside as shown in the pics below.

Looking to purchase a mountain bike to get into it. Have mountain biked before but never owned one. There are multiple trails near my house. Really trying to keep it under $500 (for the bike itself) so I have been keeping my eye on Craigslist. I am completely new to this so I’m not sure what to look for. Can someone please look at the CL ad and tell me what you think. Fair price, nice bike, etc... https://roanoke.craigslist.org/bik/d/specialized-rockhopper-disc/6543744711.html

    Yeah.
It's older, but it's a quality bike. For your price range and what you want to do, it's a good bike, but that price is way too high. I wouldn't go more than $200.

My advice would be to get one that fits most importantly. Once you do, ride to see if you get into it. If you do, resist the urge to upgrade a cheaper bike and just get what you want. So often in the beginning I put money into a cheap bike that resulted in nothing in return. Would have been much further ahead to just buy something else. Unfortunately, anymore, bikes basically start at $2500. If you're into it, you won't think twice about spending that.
