Like the 4.0 in 2nd gen has gobs of low end torque?
Do what you feel is best man. You are not happy. Understood. You don't like it. There are always a few. 16K people a month are, as evidenced by sales figures.
    Good luck.

Let's just hope the issue was fixed in '10 like they claimed it was.

We can talk like adults here. Buy what you want, I know what’s in my garage and what holds it’s value.

People lease BMWs because they depreciate 75% in 5 years.

Owners buy and keep Porsche’s because they’re highly collectible in 5 years.

Interesting. My 3rd gen 2.7L 5spd MT has nice low gearing. You can cruise in 3rd and 4th on hilly back roads all day.

That was in comparison to shakerhood's 6spd MT.

+1 for considering the tune. Like I said, I too miss the low end. That's the thing I personally find about this truck. We all know where the short comings are. There's no denying them. Just as a package this has been my fav Tacoma yet. Never did drive a 1st gen though ;) .

Side note , for a dig in factor, I believe 2000 was the last year for the i6 F150 in stick. If you ever get the chance to drive one of those it is a joy. No frills basic package but boy was that a good motor/trans combo

I don't think things changed from the 2nd gen 3rd gen 4 cylinder 5 speed manual trans.

I seem to like my 17 Tacoma. I like the shifting in town at low speeds and when necessary I use ECT PWR mode when I am about to hit the highways. Then again all I do is on road driving. Loving this midsize truck, easy to get places and park, and able to do exactly what I need for a family man. Huge plus is the community the Tacoma has and aftermarket. Never knew Tacoma has such a following. I am brand new to Tacoma's, but this forum rivals forums I use to be part of Camaro, Corvette, still on GTO's but it's dead.

It’s your money and you should buy what you want and not settle. I’d say sell it since you had the 2nd gen and know what to expect

Personally just the technology and the styling, just a mistake on my part. I wanted a new truck after owning my 2006 for 10 years, and I had faith/loyalty in Toyota. But I feel like I took 1 step forward and 2 steps backwards buying this 3rd gen. This powertrain is what killed this truck for me, underpowered engine with a ridiculous rev hang, clunky noisy manual trans, and a howling rear diff. A popping noise when i hit a bump (which was identified as a normal characteristic).

I've regeared and added lockers, but it still sucks, i tried to like it. To me it looks like a bad ass truck, but it is the worst powertrain a tacoma has ever had. especially when full size trucks are getting better mpg and more power/torque.

Just stating the truth because grossmoto said tacoma was the highest resale truck period.

I agree 100% If i could go back and save the money I would. interior isn't a reason to trade in.

But you can choose the gear that you want with the automatic, using S-mode. Any gear, at any time.

For new owners and those who are unaware:

Just flick the lever over to the left and choose which gear you want it to top out in. And, you can always shift it down if you like at any time. Or, you can shift up at any time.

You are in control of that thing!

You can leave it in S4 around town if you like so it won’t shift into 5th or 6th gear. Also good for mountain roads.

You can keep it from shifting into 6th gear if you want. So no hunting between 5th and 6th around town or up hills.

You can keep it from going into 5th gear if you so desire. So no hunting between 4th and 5th around town or on hills.

If you like, you can shift it as a manual, starting in first gear and rowing up and down, just without a clutch.

And yes of course! I’ve owned several manual transmission cars and trucks in over 40 years of driving.

Understand, but a Raptor is an option package on a full size Ford F series , it would still be a bad comparison if you compared Raptor resale to Tacoma Pro resale. Still apples to oranges and not worth the argument.

Then you know manual is superior for total control it wont shift unless you do it. shifting an auto isn't the solution, a different powertrain is.

How is that still not a good resale comparison? The raptor is not an “option group”. It is the same thing as buying a Tacoma pro.

I hear you, but a raptor is still the highest resale value truck PERIOD. Not an f-150 or a TRD PRO.

I’m just referring to the member who said he’s looking into buying a Raptor and said good because Tacomas have the highest resale value of any truck or SUV

I even created a thread a few days ago which doesn’t break down the models, just averages out the specific make and model.

Toyota has 4 of the top 6 in resale value.

Again I said not officially, but if you look up used cars you will see for yourself.

I’m sure the Raptor costs a good premium, they make very few and it resells for quite a premium.
