Yeah I wasn’t criticizing you or anything! Just meant if it was true it was pretty silly like many of the other reasons for various warning labels. Remember - every single thing in CA causes cancer - I know this because there are signs on everything in CA telling me something may cause cancer!

That reminds me of something. I was at a Jack-in-the Box fast food restaurant the other day. It was a newly constructed building, quite nice. Anyways I go in and order my food and I'm hanging out waiting for my to-go order to come up and I was glancing over at the nutrition poster on the wall. On this poster is a 3"x 1" general prop 65 warning that the food served in the restaurant is known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.

Might be... but I doubt it. My thoughts are if it was safety related, then the owners manual would inform owners of such practices and it would be publicized.

I think TPMS might still be it, however can't rule out that they might have a checklist for every car that rolls off assembly line, and doesn't matter what car they are making, every spare gets the sticker, even full size, identical wheel/tire, etc.

This guy describes the sticker in an old post

I'm going to make a bumper sticker that reads: "The state of California is known the the state of calif.. to cause cancer...or other ... harm. :D

I couldn’t find anything definitive on the “temporary only” and TPMS but there was discussion about it during the TPMS rule making in the early years of this millennium. Debate was compact spares would never be on vehicle long enough to need it for safety and requiring on a full size spare might discourage manufacturers from offering full size spares. Some discussion of what if used in a five tire rotation. Observation many full size don’t have matching rim so would only likely be temporarily mounted rather than in five tire.

From DOT it seems temp only rims do exist but would be marked as such with something more permanent than a sticker.

So best guess seems it is related to lack of TPMS but can’t find definitive regulation.

    Thanks for checking!

I think the answer is is is more nuanced then I initially anticipated.

This Ford website has details on why they apply labels to their spare tires, check it out:

    http://www.fordservicecontent.com/F...tleSelected=G1592532&topicHRef=G1592533&div=f

I'll quote the relevant part that was true for my truck, which was 4 alloy wheels on the off-road Model Truck and the spare wheel was a full size but on a steel wheel. So we'll call it full size dissimilar wheel with sticker.

So it would appear that the full-size dissimilar wheel can affect handling of the vehicle which in turn would be a safety issue, hence the label.

    Everything does cause cancer.

Little known fact, time causes death.

    So does oxygen.

Don't even get me started on di-hydrogen oxide.

We all avoid things that cause cancer, and end up with greater longevity, so we can die from Alzheimer.'s.

So let's abolish healthcare and arm the children.

    Wait, what?

Both our 2001 VW and 2004 Subaru had full-size non-temporary spares on steel wheels of the same size and offset as the other 4 alloys, with no temporary label. Neither of those cars had TPMS. Since TPMS is required by law, that’s gotta be it. The other factors may just be internal policy or legal CYA. Though come to think of it, next time I’m under there, I’ll check if the spare has balance weights. That could be another factor ... also compatibility of lug nuts between steel and alloy rims ... though again those would more likely be corporate policy than regulatory concerns.

This thread has given me some great ideas for camping mods.

I also explore some of the same areas in ABDSP.

    Hey @Crom,

Your build has inspired me quite a bit. I now have L-tracks everywhere

I am trying to decide between Toyo MTs and Cooper ST Maxx in 255s. I like the rugged characteristics of both but the size of the Toyos is swaying me towards them. Do you still like your tires? And are you running with or without a sway bar?

    Very glad to hear it!

    I love Anza-Borrego!

Awesome! Yeah that L-Track is addicting, and useful! :)

Love the Toyo's. Very well made tire, made in Japan. No complaints for what they are. I plan to purchase them again in time. No sway bar.

Just chiming in regarding a post a few pages back...

I have about 15k on my LCA's after the whiteline rebuild and proforged ball joint install. About 2k ago I dropped the LCA's to do the cam tab reinforcement upgrade and inspected and regreased the bushings. I didn't pull them out of the sleeve - the Prothane Supergrease makes them supperrrr sticky and a pain to pull out. I did regrease the surfaces and the inner surfaces though. The hardware was coated with a Molykote 321 dryfilm lubricant along with Prothane Supergrease (contact points only not the threaded section) and the molykote wore rubbed away on the surface that contacts the metal sleeve insert on the LCA's. Overall I'm quite content with the whiteline bushing upgrade - the proforged ball joint on the other hand needed a new boot as it was already starting to pop off around the base - Proforged sent me a new ball joint however I just haven't the down time to pull them off and bring them to a shop to press out. These proforged ball joints are a huge PAIN to press in/out.

I have a second set of LCA's I'll be rebuilding this summer and might see if Moog offers the bootless balljoint for the LCA's... that'll be a sweet score if they offer a size that fits.

    Thanks for your descriptive post!

Sorry to hear about the boot--what a pain.

Yes Moog makes a LBJ for our trucks. I have them, see this post for pics. I'm running a double boot on mine. :)

I have 3,800 miles since I put the rebuilt LCA's with Whitelines on. I'm not looking forward to regreasing them. I may even go back to OEM bush.
