In my profession i sometimes work with Toyota engineers, both in Japan and the US. One of my friends is in Toyota transmission design.
The secrecy NDA's these guys have are incredible, so ANYTHING on the level of groundbreaking news like a diesel is just not going to happen. This is not Ford or Jeep, where leaks are planned.
Every now and then i manage to get those big "secrets" like a new model color or a date for a mid model year change.

Could Toyota offer a diesel? Sure. Any time soon? Again, sure but that news will not be leaked. Toyota is way too careful.

    I call bullshit.

I’m still skeptical of any deisel replacement for Tundra/Sequoia 5.7 or the Tacoma and the total cost of ownership for the diesel. More expensive to buy and fill the tank. And, maintenance cost seems like a crap shoot.

My Cummins takes 3 gallons of oil (I change every 5k miles). Every other oil change two fuel filters get changed. Those fuel filters cost over $120 for the set. Fuck going 12.5k miles between oil changes, the EGR dirties the oil up quickly.

The emissions system is much more complicated and the EGR needs expensive cleaning every 60k miles. Kiss your wallet (and the right ass check next to it) goodbye if the dpf and def system die out of warranty. Hell, you gotta be careful you make sure your def doesn’t expire.

The maintenance costs are much higher in modern diesels. Ever since mid model year 2007, diesels across the board have gone from inexpensive and easy to maintain to expensive and complicated.

Plus, they absolutely hate idling, short trips and stop and go traffic. Those days are over for modern diesels and their particulate filters.

Tacoma World is not ready for a modern diesel: the whining and bitching here will be heard and felt across time and space.

The plus side? Driving a 3/4 ton big ass truck that will get 19 to 21 mpg unloaded on long trips and 14 or 15 pulling a medium sized trailer. My 2016 Ram has 23.5k miles on it of commuting, hauling trailers and acting as the family long range tour bus. Average mpg for the life of the vehicle is 17.8.

When VW purchased my tdi (dieselgate), I had a cracked DPF that was an estimated 4k to fix at the dealer.

I'll guessing it would have been half that elsewhere.

This failure was pretty common from what I saw on tdiclub forums.

Hard for me to complain, I went in knowing how complex of a vehicle it was.

Luckily, half the cost of the car was paid in fuel savings ... The other half was returned to me. I got away from it just in time, and lesson learned.

When I was ordering my 2018 Tacoma I asked the dealership here in Idaho about the diesel coming to Toyota and he said it wasn't gonna happen. This was Mid February 2018 when asked. He said there is lots of talk out there. I was like yeah, I can buy an 18 now and then wait for the 1st generation diesel to get run through to buy the 2nd gen type. Guess will have to wait and see.

If Toyota did offer a diesel option do you think the aftermarket would follow with a delete kit?

I mean as popular a platform as the Tacoma is Somebody is bound to try it. Unless Toyota follows gm’s lead and puts a rotating lock on the ecm

*disclaimer, I don’t see Toyota offering a diesel anytime soon. I mean the 5.0 that went in the titan xd was offered to Toyota for the tundra and they passed

Toyota sees how piss poor the duramax is doing for the Colorado and sees ford putting a turbo ecofail in the ranger, you think they are going to step out on a limb and drop a diesel in the Tacoma? Not a fucking chance

Damn, what filters are they and do you replace yourself? I also added an extra water separator that had a gay age and could see if the pressure was building up and getting water and extra filters were cheap. I can’t relate to the DPF since mine was an 05 but I’m going to get another full-size diesel and really stuck between the Cummins and Powerstroke. I’m leaning towards the Cummins since I know how to work on them and you actually have room but my tranny was shit 48 RE. Are you satisfied with yours and won’t dint you like?

It's got a rear fuel filter (spin on/water separator) and one under the hood (element in the housing). Both the 6.7 and 5.9s prior to 2013 had just the one under the hood. The rear one does most of the leg work - it gets twice as dirty as the under hood one.

They are easy to change (once you break the initial factory gorilla screw on) - just expensive.

I have the 68RFE and have no issues with it....but I'm not modded in any way.

We had a fleet of the new 6.7 powerstrokes at work and had to have the left cylinder head replaced (under warranty) in almost all of the them. Ford is the nicer truck - Ram has the better drivetrain.

At the end of the day, the Cummins is a much simpler engine and the more proven one at that. I'm not a fan of dodge or ram - but I am a fan of the Cummins.

The next gen Cummins is supposed to do away with the EGR...if that set up proves itself out, it would be worth waiting for.

I’m not a dodge fan but I agree powertrain wise and I believe AAM has been making fords axles for awhile so they are same quality. The motor in the Cummins is simple compared to the others. Doing away with the DPF is news to me. I just want another 4x4 Cummins quad cab but in long bed this time. I am not a fan of the rear coils so I think single wheel one ton might be my choice. Do you know how long they projected roughly?

Wife had a 2012 TDI sportwagon. The fucking HPFP grenaded before the DPF could commit suicide.

Two vehicles I will never own again - anything by BMW (including MINI) and any VW. That TDI was a shit show.

The problem with the current diesel emissions setups is in it's complexity - and the adverse consequences for the engine. The next gens for GM and Ram are doing away with the EGR - which is a big step in rectifying this. Still, the whole setup is geared towards situations in which the engine can easily and efficiently perform a passive regen or not need to regain often due to optimum operating temps. The problem is that the modern commuter and grocery getter does not expose the system to "optimum" conditions. This means more regens - which means more fuel dilution, more wear and tear on the engine and emissions equipment, shorter service intervals, etc, etc.
