I had the same problem. I also used the 47ohm resistors from Radio shack to replace the 510 surface mount resistors and it has worked well.

Thanks for the tip! My temp display went out approximately a week ago. Anyway, bought a soldering iron and some solder...never even soldered before and guess what...works like a charm.

just wanted to relay my experience today with regards to the much-maligned compass/temp display.
pulled mine apart and like many others, the solder joints on my "510's" looked fine to the naked eye. i did however, notice the freqentely mentioned "burn mark" on the lcd display....i figured there was no harm in getting in some solder practice on an apparentely fried unit. i went ahead and resoldered both sides on both 510's since i couldn't see a faulty joint in any of them. plugged the unit back in and whaddaya' know,...the darn thing worked!
many others have said their solder welds appeared normal, much as mine looked. all i can say is, "give it a shot."
the burn mark still troubles me but i figure i'm playing with house money at this point anyhow.

Interesting. I hooked up my radar detector and after doing so my temp/comp stopped working. Being cheap I tore into the board and noticed the same resistor that had come unsoildered. Took a chance resoildered and away I go again with everything working. Love this site for this reason. You run across posts that others have done and can save yourself a lot of headaches and money. Good job and just adding my two cents worth.

5100's set at 2.5", toytec AAL, DIY AUX port, broken mirror fix, temp/compass fix (twice), rattle-can gunmetal sport rims, debadged doors, fog-light anytime mod, DTRL mod, rear differential breather mod, drop in K&N air filter
mine started coming and going for a while and then completely shut off. I pulled it apart after reading a tutorial on another site and soldered it with no experience. Granted, the job looks horrible and the resistor is actually sitting off of the board at an angle but it works again. and i used enough solder that even if it melts, it'll probably still have enough to hold it.

No just add to what is there. Heat up the board and existing solder till it is molten then add the new.

BTW I checked the 510 chip you said to solder and one side was loose.

My 2006 Tacoma with 33,300 miles on it. Last week the Temp guage went out. Found this thread and fixed it in 30 min. The chip was so small I just put a little flux and a little slodier on the tip and fixed it.
Thanks a million for this tip. :)

    Hey Secret,

I just bought an 06 Taco, and noticed the compas was not working. The sellers tells me that it went out 2 yrs ago. Well, I want it fixed. The dealer said it would cost $280.00 installed. No way, and I've seen some threads saying $800.00, no freaking way. Anyway, my next step before taking it apart is to check the fuse? Then check the E/M button holding down and see if anything happens? If not I guess i'll have get my hands dirty.
My question to you, is your compas still working after you did the soldering job?

    Thanks

I'm guessing that you've got this same issue. Crack it open & see what you've got :D You won't even get your hands dirty on this one...

Oh yeah, I'm still good since making the fix...

Mine is still working as well...when you open it up it will be the resistor numbered 510 and it will be obvious that it needs to be resoildered...Once done I'll bet it starts to work again...
