Is my clutch starting to go?

    I've begun to notice with my 2000 that when I shift into 4th gear, on my manual, it goes into gear just fine then revs up to almost redline after a second, as if the clutch is fully engaged until i let my foot off the gas and let it catch again. It's as if it slips out of gear.

    Does this mean my clutch is starting to go? It only does this when it's in 4th gear however.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    it is starting to go, same thing happend with my 99. Clutches are expensive and difficult to replace. take it to a transmission shop and have then do the job

    Yes, it sounds like it's time for a new clutch. It will probably last for quite a while if you drive normally, mine slipped for 30,000 before it burned up hotrodding.

    A clutch is maybe $150 online, and doing it yourself is pretty easy if you have a hoist. I did mine at a buddy's in one day and under $200 total. A shop will want $800 to do it easy.

    I agree with the ease of replacing. I know its a different gen, but my dad and I replaced my clutch in 3 hours and it was about $180 from the dealership.

    If you know what to do, I'd say replace it yourself, maybe ask a friend to help.

    Is the clutch getting harder and harder to push? Cause that's also a good sign that its on the way out

    I know this doesn't help you much, but a sign that a clutch is going is usually most seen in 1st gear, in addition to the friction point being close to the top of the pedal. When its worn down, whats happening is the clutch pad doesn't have as much material to fully engage against the flywheel so it slips when there's more stress on it.

    As far as your problem goes, I'd probably have to lean more towards a transmission problem. Does it do it from 3 to 4 as well as from 5 to 4?

    I dont know much at trans, but there is a syncro that helps the gears align between shifting. Each gear should have two syncros, one for up shifting and one for down shifting. That's about the limit of my knowledge of it. Usually a broken syncro will cause gear grinding though, so maybe something inside is stuck engaged or maybe isn't where its supposed to be so it doesn't disengage properly. Not really sure on the intracacies of a trans to that extent.

    I have no idea how the syncros actually do what they're supposed to or what happens when one has failed, but it is the only component I could think of that relates to shifting from one gear to another that would only affect one gear.

    usually you notice the clutch slipping in the higher gears first. 4th and 5th is what mine was slipping in when I did my clutch job. When I was on the freeway in 4th or 5th if I stepped oin the gas anymore that a light touch it would rev way up. hope that helps a little

    If there's 100k to 150k miles on yer clutch and it's doin' what yer sayin', then I'd say clutch (my '92 did the same).

    yeah it sometimes does it in 5th but it's not nearly as noticeable. this clutch has to have at least 75k on it.

    I've also noticed it can be pretty rough starting from a dead stop. It shakes and rumbles until I get going then it seems to be ok until I get high rpms in 3rd and then 4th is just brutal.

    How much does a new clutch usually run?

    it's not getting any harder to put in I think but it does have a really high catch point and sometimes gets stuck halfway down. I don't think the guy before me replaced the clutch so this bad boy could have 160k on it as far as I know...

    well it could have lasted that long, that's just how many miles I've put on it since I bought it. It probably has never been replaced. I don't really have a lot of experience with this kind of stuff but is it straightforward enough to do it?

    Not very straight forward. I've personally never done it but the hardest part is probably pulling the tranny. You also have to get the flywheel resurfaced so add a few bucks for that.
