One Ton Tacoma.... Come and see!

Well, I had to do a little yard work yesterday. So, I went down to a friend of mine's land and picked up some sod for my yard. I don't have a trailer so I had to put it in the back of the truck. My DC does have the LS TSB done and I was curious to see how it would handle it. The bump stops were about a half inch from touching the frame, but it handled it pretty good. I ran about 55- 60 home and didn't have much difficulty. So, here's what 2,000 lbs of sod looks like in the back of a Tacoma.

 

Impressive. I would have thought it would have been sagging more than that.

Nice! Seeing how much (little) it sagged makes me wonder if I was off on my weight estimation when I loaded up on landscaping bricks and dirt:

 

Glad you made it home safely and without doing any immediate damage. Overloading like that over-stresses the leaf packs and will wear them out early. Hope a pretty lawn is worth it.

 

That was really a full load. I don't think you could have gone with much more.

I kinda hoped it would break the TSB packs in. They ride a little stiff to me and hoped this would soften them up. It seems to be OK. I won't be doing this again as I have all I need. Also, I only drove about 8 miles like this.

 

Because of the extra pressure caused by overloading your truck by 200-800 lbs (I don't know what a DC is rated for..but my guess is it's in the range of 1200-1300 lbs.) will blow seals out pretty easily.

That is the trade off in getting the TSB....I hope it worked out to do what you wanted without limiting the life of your springs...

OP Post said his bump stops were half an inch from the frame, but no one will really know until we get pictures of the actual parts.

 

I don't buy this at all, an axle is not pressurized.. Extra load isn't going to increase pressures at all. It is vented, not a sealed space anyhow. A load could increase heat in the oil due to additional friction. But the only axle seals I have ever seen blow were due to outer bearing failure, bent axleshafts or grit chewing up the rubber seal.
