Engine oil temp through OBD2. Use a OBD2 bluetooth reader and then hook up to OBD Fusion (iPhone) or Torque (Android) and you can read the custom Toyota PIDs to get pretty much any live display of ECU parameters.

Will we see it as a new tune here or will it just replace what's already there?

it will be a new flash manager download.

posting all of this information again, as there are more trucks popping up with very old ECU versions (04B00, 04B01) so I think there is an increasing amount of customers that are unaware of issues with stock vehicles and Toyota TSB / Recalls for issues

I had someone email me over the weekend that their 100% stock 2018 version truck has this same issue of stuttering and what feels like missing from 1100 rpm to 2500 rpm any time they drive. They went to the dealer multiple times and the dealer said this is "normal operation."
This leads me to believe that the issue is more widespread.

Also, regarding this update. As I have said many times before please do not flash and flash and flash your truck. Flash the truck once, and put the necessary driving time on it for all modes of trims/learning to complete.
This takes time, and miles. Every time you reflash everything goes right back to 0. Once ALL of the trims are set is when it will be running at it's most efficient.

regarding some other issues, like cold start / stutter, etc.
the new flash manager version will have updated tunes that should help this for any affected trucks.

    regarding stuttering -
This is an issue that exists on stock trucks. If your truck has or has ever had this problem, it is likely the problem is outside of the tune.
I think now that there are more customers running the tune and more people popping up, it's possible there are more trucks out there with the issues that have been around since the beginning.

So it is important to know and check
    - there is a known issue with the CPS / crank position sensor. A recall on this.
It affects many trucks outside of the recall. (many people have replaced the CPS on their own and found this to solve multiple problems with the truck).
So I would start with this, check if your truck is on the CPS recall list.
If your issue is pronounced and repeatable, and not on the recall list, a CPS replacement may still be required. Multiple people have proven that Toyotas recall does not actually include all trucks that are affected.

regarding the surge when engine is cold / other idle things -
this also exists stock, to a lesser degree (and cleaned in newer version)
for the people who start the truck up and drive right away after 10-20 seconds, the ECU continually switches back and forth between two different idle targets. There is a cold target and a drive target. The You will see this when you are at a stop or in nuetral, the truck will go back up to 1000/1100 rpm.
it's a matter of the engine being cold, and the ECU targeting the cold idle RPM targets.

    regarding idle:
    - just remember every time you reflash the truck the ECU has to completely relearn all idle airflow. This does not happen quickly.

regarding the change in idle when turning the wheel. Normal, exists on stock truck.

    regarding downshift :
I do not know why some trucks have hard downshifting on stock tune or a hard downshift with/without tune.

I did read about 30 pages of it. That’s why I’m interested in it, and looking for deeper history. Thanks.

Is this still dropping today? Your post yesterday said today.
Now this post says this week. I’m hoping for something today so I can actually drive/use this on my day off.

This is the real deal folks - my Aug 16' Baja born '17 was NOT part of the recall. took it to dealer multiple times for irregular performance - roughness, rough idle, intermittent drop in power, amongst other things. They kept it a day and sent me on my way saying "no code, no problems" essentially... saw the recall and figured I'd try it out since it was just a $100 part. Boom - truck hasn't idled "rough" since then and the tune only made it even smoother.

For Mat, or other users...roughly how many miles does it take for the tune to settle in? Meaning, how much time do I need behind the wheel before I consider stepping to the 91 tune as I feel the 87 tune isn't getting me what I want.

You could do 91 right off the bat. They're separate maps. A tune "settling in" doesn't matter if you reset everything to zero with a different map

understood, I guess what I'm asking is, how long should I wait while running the 87 tune to decide if its effectiveness is taking place? I have about 175 miles across 3 days in various conditions of city and highway and before I make the jump to 91 I wanted confirmation that 87 has stopped the learning process so to speak.

Whenever you want. 175miles seems fine. Plus, if it's just going to reset with the 91 map then it seems kind of irrelevant to me

Note: I'm going to assume you have the auto trans just because that's more common statistically, and so I'm less knowledgeable about questions that people may be asking where the separate TCU flash may be concerned, since I have the MT. Fair warning.

Your caveat makes complete sense, and thank you for the time.
It's not my first tuned vehicle, but it is my first tuned Toyota and naturally aspirated motor (most recently a tuned EcoBoost F150) so the effectiveness is less immediately apparent and felt. Just wanted to give the 87 tune a fair chance before I overwrite it in lieu of the 91 tune on 93 octane fuel. With the AT, and my 35/12.5/18 rubber, I'm finding that I cruise around 1900-2100 RPM and the lack of torque in that range leaves me wanting. The 87 tune flattened out the power spike, but I'm hoping the 91 tune will help with that lower band and maybe give me what I'm looking for in that range.

With those tires, I would jump to the 91 map anyway lol
