I hope you have snow and mountaineering experience, then. Lakes will be frozen over still, actually. That's really early in the season. The shuttle won't be running from Mammoth down to Reds Meadow that soon, either.

Beat me to it. Backpacker and Outside buyer’s guides are highly swayed by who gives them money.

Used to be a time I respected what they had to say. Backpacker respect lasted a lot longer than my respect of Outside.

You know, that may be true, but unfortunately it’s hard to find an unbiased review in any commercial field. I find myself doing lots of google searches about various items and then compare the reviews and rankings. It would be a whole lot easier if someone would do all that work for me, lol.

The Sierra's are not going to have any open backcountry until end of June. I don't know what SoCal has.

Anyone around Indiana care to trade some camping gear for a mobtown off-road tailgate reinforcement plate?! Not really looking to ship. Message me if interested. Thanks.

Love it! Man, you've got some great overhead storage areas to really maximize. I'm jealous of the height of your room.

Well, shit. Just pulled the trigger on a Zpacks Altaplex tent in the camo print to add to the collection. It's the same length as my Solplex but 6" wider which will really help with gear storage at night. It's also 10" taller which is a HUGE bonus because it's more headroom when sitting up but more importantly the head and foot walls are more upright and will keep my quilt and head away from condensation. More vestibule height to stand my pack underneath, too. Only 2.5oz heavier than the Solplex but 5oz lighter than my Duplex.

Nice Adam...I was really torn on which light weight shelter to go with. Seeing as most times now a days I am car camping with Brutus so I sleep in my RTT. I decided my primary use for an ultralight shelter was for packrafting and backcounty exploration but ultimately going with only 1 to suit all my needs would be financially beneficial. I wound up going with a HMG Ultamid 4 in spruce green and the Ultamid 4 half insert when they had their black friday sales. Also picked up a carbon fiber pole for the mid from MLD.

Solid choice. I really looked at those, and in the end I didn't want to deal with a separate insert because I'll probably never use a shelter without a bathtub floor. I've been flooded under my tent too many times, but now I choose my tent sites better at least. The Altaplex comes in at just under 19oz with the camo material which I'm really happy about. I love the camo print on my Solplex because it darkens the moonlight a bit and gives great privacy. It's a bit stronger thanks to the thicker laminate as well.

I've never used a shelter without a bath tub floor either if I'm sleeping on the ground but figured this would give me some versatility and an opportunity to drop a little weight depending on what kind of trip I'm doing...ultamid 4 alone 23.03oz, half insert 18.73oz so a combined 41.76oz or 2.61 lbs, not bad for a 4 person shelter. To be honest I never even really looked at zpacks shelters when I was shopping, I was mainly looking between HMG and MLD.

Heading to Alabama Hills this weekend. Planning to camp, fish, boulder, and hopefully relax in some hot springs. Can anyone point me in the right directions for the hot springs around bishop and mammoth? Ill most likely be fishing owens river, lone pine creek, and PVR. bouldering ill just be getting a book to find areas and routes.
