I don't understand why everyone wants a diesel Tacoma. Are you itching for an 11 second zero to 60? Diesel is great for towing, but if I'm towing, I'm not buying a midsized truck anyway.

 

They want that torque to climb a rock or some shit...

 

Because it is a stupid fad.

This overall a good thing. I don't think the Japanese get the US truck market, and who else would but North Americans. It's a weird market. The concept of a Ford Raptor or a GMC denali HD as work-vehicles that are also luxury vehicles appropriate in the parking lot of a high-class restaurant has got be weird. It has to be weird to anyone that is not an American.

It's has to be an engineering nightmare. Because while efficiency is a big consumer demand, consumer's also love TRD pros, ZR2s, Ford Raptors, Rebels and Trial bosses. They want 20MPG but at the same they want 2 inch lifts, badass looks and huge tires.

And look at the options that Toyota gives for it's trucks, it's light years behind the domestics.



I doubt that the US will get anymore diesel imports from any manufacturer. The restrictions are just too strong.

Look at the three big markets. Europe, China, America.

China, under Xi Jingping, is going full-on green as part of their 50 year plan. I doubt there is going to be a market for euro-diesels in China, and that is a huge market for the German automakers. The Chinese would rather piss on themselves than buy Japanese.

Europe is getting away diesel, and after the VW scandal, I doubt Audi and VW will ever bring diesel to the US.

Further, with the Compression ignition Petro-engines debuting in the next 2-3 years. I doubt there is a future for diesel.

 

I'm really torn on this too, honestly. I think Toyota should have experimented with a better gear ratio. Even with stock tires, my truck would get bogged down with a stiff breeze and have to downshift. I think something like Ford's 10 speed would be much more appropriate.

These 3rd gens barely use those two overdrive gears. My truck double downshifts at the slightest incline and then holds 4th way too long. Its a mess.

 

Wouldn't more gears make the hunting worse? I think mine would be great with a 5 speed and an overdrive for the highway. I go mostly up and down hills at 45-55 all day though. This truck cannot keep speed on hills without mashing the throttle and it ends up being jerky.

 

Not if done right. Would it shift more often? Yep, but it'd have the correct ratio without having to panic and double down shift to 4th every time. The truck should have been a 5 speed if it can't hold up against a gust of wind on the highway.

 

I have heard good things about the 10speed, so you are probably right. I guess I'm just hesitant to embrace them because I know it's mpg motivated not driver experience motivated

 

Yeah, its a shame the consumer is getting guinea pigged so much these days. We all just want a good product, not a science experiment.

 

I was totally against a diesel option for quite a long time. I didn't see much point.

I do find one that might get me on board..... range. A diesel option really might bump up the range one can get on a single tank of gas. This might really be a bigger deal for those that offroad.

 

From what I was reading it sounds like the only time it uses all 10 gears is under full throttle. If the engine behind it is producing enough torque then I doubt it would be very shifty.

 

Me either but I do... these trucks are dogs unless you lay into them. Hate having to look like a jackass with the motor screaming around 4500+ just to pass somone doing 45

 

Flipside to that is, if you are in middle of nowhere and the DPF goes to cycle, faults and shuts down. Whoops you done.

If you don’t let it cycle properly it will send your truck right into limp mode and you will be a sitting duck

 

Theoretically, should we be seeing a totally redesigned Tundra? Big 3 has come out with recent redesigns. Tundra is still ______.
