hell no. You can't retune a toyota ecu. Not possible. Will either need a piggy back like an FIC6 or go full standalone like a Haltech or AEM.

Just ballpark - how much am I looking at for a decent complete turbo system for this truck?

My budget for the parts truck was $3,000 - so I'm wondering if that's a reasonable price for a good turbo system. If I can match or exceed the performance of the 5VZ then Turbo seems like the way to go.

Boost is an endless pit. Done right and nicely? 3-5k. Baller setup. 10k+. Getto. 1500.

You could easily surpass a stock 5vz. If you have deep pockets then sky is the limit. 500hp if you pay for the parts.

This is probably one of the nicest kits for the 2.7 out there: http://www.koracing.net/viewproduct.php?folder=103&product=479

I know some of those words... $2,500 isn't bad - much cheaper than a supercharger. What the hell does "680bhp laggy lagster" mean?

That can't mean 680 HP, it can't be. I am assuming HP and BHP are used interchangeably.

yeah measn the turbo will hold and make 680hp.

Doesn't mean your motor will without some major overhaul.

But you can go to 300 with no issues usually.

thats a base kit. YOu still need to do the fuel system and tuning.

BHP is brake horsepower and used to mean HP before the drivetrain is introduced. Also that KO kit is what I'm going with. Good value, I'm getting the one with the billet compressor wheel. Want that boost to come on real quick.

What kind of modifications would entail pushing that engine to 680HP - or at least a reasonable 300-400 HP.

I am assuming the A340F or the 3RZ can even handle almost 700 HP.

Why did you decide to do a turbo versus say an engine swap or even a supercharger?

I don't think the auto would hold that power. Not without custom built out.

You'd want a manual and forged internals all around and MHG. Balancing and one HELL of a damn good tune.

For 300, that will be pushing the tranny anyways. You just need the turbo kit, basic fuel mods and a nice tune.

The billet 46mm turbo would be super fast spool and torque for days.

SC is still on my radar, think it might be more reliable but there are quite a few on here that run a turbo without issue on the 4 banger. Engine swap just doesn't seem worth the cost for me. 5VZ isn't much of a step up from the 4 banger power wise in my opinion, I can more than make that up with a turbo and a few supporting mods and have more fun in the process. I'm comfortable working with a turbo system as well and have done it before. Swapping to a 5VZ would set me back the cost of the engine and drivetrain and then I still only have 190HP and have to spend the turbo or SC money anyway haha. 4 banger is more than reliable and likes boost, plus lacks much of the goofy pinging behavior that even some stock NA 5VZs exhibit.

Always wanted to ask someone who's done it.... what's the point man? They're FWD and have economy car suspension... like what's the motivation to bother?

yea, im in the same boat now. after hearing the dyno results im thinking on selling the 4.7L and going SC on the 5VZ. not saying that the 4.7L isn't worth the trouble but its the price and time of doing the engine swap for the same power out of the v6 w/ SC. and the truck will be down for 2-3 days compared to 2-3 weeks.

thats the biggest reason that keeps me going with it. 310 ft.lbs of torque will be amazing in the off-road adventures plus a v8 tacoma. i love the challenge that its providing me but im also a realist lol. the amount of low rev grunt the v8 will produce is really hard to ignore for me. but im taking the time and doing everything i can to minimize the downtime of the truck. friend of mine suggested getting a 2nd tacoma and tear it down to the frame and go from there.

Not a small project. But i mean..the hp figure isn't surprising. Could have googled that. haha

v8 will be cool. Just a lot of work. I wouldn't buy another. You'll never finish haha
