Can anyone tell me whether or not the slotted track that FrontRunner sells for their canopy/caps or trailer mounts are the same as the universal tracks sold by Yakima or Thule?

I'm looking to buy a FrontRunner Slimline 2 rack for my Leer cap and the only option I see is to buy a kit that includes FR tracks. If I can get away with not buying the tracks I would love that. Of course FR recommends their tracks for strength and whatever, I just don't want to buy and replace my perfectly good tracks.

But none of that info does any good if I can't find just the Slimline 2 available without one type of mount or another. It doesn't appear they just sell the tray itself on the website either.

Unfortunately I can't find where to buy the rack ala-cart. It looks like you have to buy it as a package, they don't come without the track. You can buy feet separately but not just the rack part itself.

Old thread but I figured people would be interested in my experience using Thule tracks.

    DON'T DO IT!!!!

They will not last. After having the tent mounted for 4 months and many miles of rough roads and trails the tracks failed this weekend.

I got out of my went on Saturday and almost turned myself into a Taco. luckily my wife was still in the tent and was able balance the load.
The Thule tracks completely wore out and the bolts sheared out of the tracks. We moved the feet from the right side to the center of the track and got on the trail. After a few hours the left side also failed and if it wasn't for the strap i had on Im sure the whole rack and canopy would have come off.

So in short, just get the frontrunner tracks. they look to be much stronger and the supplied m8 bolts will hold up much better.

Everyone is safe and there was no serious damage.

So can anyone answer this, .can you replace the Yakima tracks with the frontrunner without drilling new holes into the shell? Any more feedback on anyone using this setup, I'm loving a frontrunner rack but the ease of use and install leans me towards a prinsu set up

I drilled two additional holes per side with no issues to add the frontrunner tracks. Its really not a big deal. DO NOT USE Yakima or Thule tracks with the rack if you plan on putting a tent on the truck.

20190531_124012.jpg I just installed their tray with #5 legs and rhino gutter plates. I wanted the tray lower than tracks would allow. The slats are about 1.25" above the topper. It involved a bunch of measuring, some guessing, and persuading a customer service rep. I don't plan on putting a rtt up there, mostly lighter stuff.

Just bumping this up since I too have existing tracks and looked at installing the Slimline II — looks like drilling is required for a stronger rack installation.

I am trying to figure out this exact installation question. I want to install a FrontRunner rack onto a Leer cap on my Tacoma with Thule tracks. I will not be installing a rooftop tent, and will only be carrying the approved weight for the cap of around 220 lbs. Does this sound safe? If I do have to use the FrontRunner tracks, will all new holes have to be drilled and does it pose a leakage issue or invalidate the warranty?

it will invalidate the warranty if it isn't something Leer installs...however, the work is pretty straight-forward and minimally risky if you adhere to the weight limits. The wight limits on the topper, the tracks, and the basket. I have some thule tracks I'm sitting here with and am now second guessing it! I don't plan on putting a RTT up there, but want the strongest solution possible so the weak points are at least consistent.

I bought my FrontRunner rack in november last year, so less than 6 months ago. Is there a FrontRunner/Dometic rep on here that can guide me to a set of tracks for my 6' leer? Happen to be running the one meant for a RSI Smart Canopy, which was recommended.
