I have a Remington 870 Tactical express 6+1 12 gauge. I love it. I purchased the Bullpup kit for it from www.bullpupunlimited.com and converted it for ease of use and home protection.

remington 870 at walmart is prob the cheapest place to buy. Ive had mine since 1993, it was the first shotgun I ever purchased and it still works great!

    Thanks!

I live in an area where the likelihood of needing to use any kind of firearm to defend my property is, well, unlikely. This is especially true since I plan on having a dog or two, and a burglar alarm, as well.

Are firing ranges where I can "exercise" the shotgun readily available?

Almost all ranges have the capability to bring the shotgun and play around with it.

I think walmart price on the 88 is around $200. As for shooting areas, google rod and gun clubs near you.

Yes. Shotguns are the essence of a household gun. Been around for 100 years. Reliable, cheap ammo, and won't blast through walls throughout your neighborhood if shit does hit the fan

And often, all you have to do is pump it. Just the sound of a shotgun being loaded is enough to scare away an intruder!

I'd look at a used 590 or an older 870. The 88 is not a bad gun but if it were me I'd rather have a quality used shotgun than an entry level new gun.

Shotguns are a lot of fun and a great home defense tool. What windsor posted above are truly words of wisdom, whatever you end up buying, familiarize yourself with it. I bought my first shotgun for defense but now I go trap shooting with a group of friends several times a year and really enjoy the sport.

If you can, attend a local gun show and handle several makes and models, that would be ideal. The gunbroker website is useful for checking prices.

I own a Remington 870 for defense and a Benelli M2 for trap shooting. Oh yeah, if possible, test your home defense load on a piece of drywall at whatever distance you think you might need to use a shotgun inside your house. Safe shooting!

    Hi, Mr. Unpopular here.
Low probability of home invasion, security system, and dogs? Don't buy a shotgun for home defense.
Buy a shotgun if you want to go skeet shooting.

Federal flight control buckshot is a good defensive load

If you have to load it when you need it you did it wrong. All you should be doing is deactivate the safety. Racking the slide makes a noise, it also gives away your position and someone that is there to cause you harm, now knows where to shoot first.
Also, for home defense, a 5.56 has less wall penetration than 12G buckshot. A 12G isn't a death ray that kills everything in front of it. Look at the size of the barrel. that's the effective spread you are going to have in a close quarters engagement, which is what inside your house means. It will not make hitting your target easier. For home defense, I prefer a handgun with a light attached.
The reason? How are you going to call the cops when you need 1 hand to hold the grip of the shotgun and another hand on the fore end to rack it or hold it steady?
I like shotguns, but they aren't the best tool for this job.
But if you are going to get one, DON'T buy a new Remington 870. Look for an older one at a pawn shop or get a Mossberg 500 or Maverick 88.

Yes get one! They say guns are like parachutes, if you're ever in a situation where you need one but don't have one, you probably won't need one again..

Remington 870, mossberg 500, or benelli supernova is what I'd go with (I have an 870).

Personally, my nightstand gun is a beretta 92fs with a flashlight on it. In doors the spread of a shotgun is only like ~2 inches and imo a handgun is a little easier to maneuver.

    Good luck!

You still have to aim. Like the guy above said, it won't spread like people think. Patterning a shotgun is important.
