I go by the "only illegal if you get caught" philosophy when it comes to Tacoma modifications...

Not willing to risk it with firearms!

My aunt snuck her boyfriend into the house when she was like 13, and my uncle (her older brother found him hiding in her closet). He ran for his life while my bolted, but my uncle shot him in the ass with his BB gun as he was leaving for good measure...

Burglar. Had hit a few other houses in the Keys. This was back in '91.
Anyways, Id say yes, get a shotgun if you want one. Also take as many courses for gun safety/use as you can and get comfortable with handling it. As far as any other weapons, that needs to come after you get comfortable with one and know the rules/regs for ownership and use. No need to jump into buying a pistol if you wont be comfortable with them.
Some indoor gun ranges rent out firearms for use on their range. That would also be a good place to check out.

Yes! Things can happen quick - no time to wait for 911. If you think about history books - doesn't take many years for shit to go south. And what about the Zombie Apocolypse? Better get ready.

I have a Mossberg. But if you are serious about getting a firearm, then take the CCW class. You will be amazed what you learn, not the least of which is gun safety.

Regardless of what you choose for home defense, the number one question for me is the appropriate load. How many people will be in the home and what is their location if there was a situation? Accuracy and penetration through walls are main considerations. My .02

Op how old are you? Do you live with your mother? I couldn’t imagine a day I wouldn’t leave my house without at least one pistol on me and I live in the middle of no where in pa. I would rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it.
After spending years in law enforcement and the marine corps I can attest their are a lot of bad people in this world. Learn to use a variety of firearms. Guns don’t kill people. Bad people with the means of destruction and hate kill people.
I could give two shits if my mother didn’t like guns. She didn’t want me to join the Corps at 18 and that didn’t stop me. If you have any doubt about using a firearm to defend yourself then you have two choices. Learn the weapons and proper handing and carrying or wait for the police to show up when someone breaks into your house and is robbing you or your family at gun point...

I heard that police can tell if you have a CCP by running your license plate. Would this lead to unnecessary bullshit if I got pulled over?

I never saw an “about me”’in your original post or on the first 3 pages. Regardless different strokes for different folks. Only you can make the decision if you want a firearm and are willing to use it when the time comes.
I was raised in a different time where the understanding of weapons were tools for hunting and protection and people in society valued life, can’t say that for modern day society.

False. You have to clearly state you have a concealed carry permit and tell the officer if you are carrying.
