Maybe I'm used to the s/c but the 3rd gen does feel slow, imo. Which is unfortunate because I would love a 2018 pro in midnight black

While I agree that the dyno numbers posted might not be the best possible scenario, it still serves a point to compare the truck’s power output. We arent talking about a difference of 3-5 hp here. Fact is, the 3g makes a bit more power.

It will all really come down to individual trucks specs. Weight, drive train, mods, etc.

    On any given day, a 3g maybe beat a 2g and vice-versa.

My point was mainly to ilustrate that the 3.5 is most definitely NOT an inferior motor. 3G truck just carries more weight due to its many more features/luxuries.

I agree they are all fantastic trucks.

Holy fuck balls - why did I read & then just respond to this thread... damn boredom.

I drove a MT 2nd Gen many many times and now own a 3g MT. Test drove them back to back 2015 vs 2017 and personally could not tell a difference beside the kick you get at the high end of the 3.5l. I have towed with both and easily feel more solid in the 3g. OP, simple - get the depreciating asset that you want and fits you needs. Since you asked us, No way would I have bought the 2015 over my 2017 before money got involved. It was a easy decision.

Honestly, I don't think the third gen will be any less reliable than previous gens.

If you don't like the truck, sell it and buy what you want.

No way I'd go to a 2nd Gen over the 3rd. Nothing wrong with the 2nd Gen, but the 3rd is just a nicer truck.

I did the same thing and made the opposite choice(money was not a factor). Different strokes for different folks, I don't understand why everyone has to get so butt-hurt over this issue?

I understand where the OP is coming from. I actually purchased a brand new '17, Double Cab, Auto, V6, 4x4, back in August. After a few days, I just couldn't live with the transmission. I brought it back to the dealer and told them to take it back. I was lucky, and they did, no questions asked. I was in the process of moving back east and just couldn't live with the lack of low end torque, and erratic shifting, especially moving to more rugged terrain and harsh winters.

After my move to the east coast, I was initially shopping for a 20012-2015, 2nd Gen. They were even tough to find in good condition, under 30k. I just couldn't believe it. Finally, I found a 2013, Gray, Double Cab, 4x4, V6, TRD at a local CarMax. It was in good shape but needed tires, and they wanted 30k for it. I caved in and said I would buy if they replaced the tires. They said no and I thankfully moved on (I wasn't about to drop 30k on a USED Tacoma and not get a decent set of tires with it).

I got lucky and found an older gentlemen on Craigslist, locally, that was selling a 2001, Xtra Cab, 4x4, 4 cylinder, Auto. I really wanted the V6, and the 2nd Gen, but for under 10k, this was worth a look. The guy only had a few pictures on Craigslist, which looked good, but no detail at all. When I went to see the truck, it was PRISTINE. There wasn't a lick of dirt or grease on the entire engine. Hardly ANY rust on the undercarriage or frame. Frame had been sprayed under recall and looked great. It had 168k miles on it and was clean as a whistle! The 4 cylinder auto was a bit under powered, but it drove nice and purred like a kitten. The 4WD engaged and worked flawlessly. Needless to say, I bought the truck and have been SO HAPPY ever since that I didn't spend tons of money for something I wasn't going to be happy with. This 2001 Tacoma will run forever and I have been able to customize it how I wanted (Bilistein 5100s all the way around, Line-X bed liner & fenders, custom stereo, etc...)

I agree with the other posters- follow your heart.

Agreed. I was VERY hesitant about the auto, 4 cyl, after owning a 2001 V6 auto back home, but it has actually surprised me! I love it! And it gets decent MPGs!

I've got a 99 T4R with 330k+ miles that runs like top, Toyota really built them well back then.

Good stuff. I have owned a 2000 & 2001 T4R and both were amazing. No big issues. Sold both for what I bought them for years later!

So.... complain about 3g tacoma performance and end up in 1G with HALF the power. Sounds legit!

I agree though, follow your heart.

Yeah it's all just preference really. I think the sunroof must be why I felt there was less head room. For me though even if I'm not really going faster, if I like the driving experience more I'll take the slower car over the faster one. One example would be the Subaru BRZ vs WRX. The WRX is almost 2 seconds faster to 60, but I like the way the BRZ feels while driving it better and it looks better IMO. That's why I would choose the BRZ over the WRX, regardless of power. Like I said though, just personal preference. I think either gen Tacoma would be fine and all Tacomas are great trucks, but I just prefer the way my 2nd gen feels and that's all that really matters.

Correct. The performance was extremely sub par for a 35k truck. My 1G truck with half the horsepower drives, and shifts better. It will probably last longer too. And I would probably have an easier time selling it used to someone than if I had bought a 3rd gen.

It's pretty sad when people like me are willing to trade in a brand new truck for a 17 year old one with half the features.

Guess I'm sad, once I don't need to cart my kids around, I would gladly drive a old no frills truck. That being said, I really like my 3rd gen, and will probably have to keep it for ever as I may never find another manual trans when I'm ready to get rid of it.

I love how guys put a couple thousand miles on their truck and say that it isn't "durable". There are guys on here that have 70,000+ miles on their 3rd gen with no issues.
