OP I've read through this entire thread, here are my thoughts. Buy a shotgun if you want one. Its a fun multi purpose tool that is a good entry into the world of firearms and not too intimidating to learn on. Take a class or go out to the range with a trusted friend/relative that has experience and can show you how to operate it properly and safely. Many a good afternoons can be had shooting and throwing clay's with your buddies at the range, without spending massive coin on ammo like some other guns. I would agree that a shotgun probably isn't the best choice for home protection but is it the worst? No. Is it better than nothing? Absolutely.

As far as the situation with your mom, since it sounds like you are legally allowed to own a firearm and responsible, I would sit down with your mother and let her know that you do intend to buy one and see what she says. Since you are still under her roof I would say this is mandatory, just as a respect thing/she may have stipulations or something. Or she may flat out say "NO" in which case I'd say wait till you move out. I will warn you that much like modding your truck can get addicting so can modding/collecting firearms. It probably wont stop at the shotgun and it probably will get expensive. Good luck!

How close are your neighbors? 00 Buckshot goes through walls...and doors. Shotguns are excellent home protection if you consider the ammo you are using and your proximity to others. Nothing as scary as a Remington 870 being racked in the dark.

Like I said, not planning on buying until I move out. Houses in in my neighborhood are rather close. Ironically there is a shotgun range near my house and if you go outside you can hear them shooting...

    Bad-ass Coach gun? Either way, it's a wrist breaker:eek:

Edit: NM. Thought it was a stubby grip. Still must have a helluva kick.

I still want a coach gun. Might even be work getting a tax stamp to get one.

As for this threads question. You can't go wrong with Mossberg 500 or Reminginton 870. A pump is going to be the most reliable. Even cheap one is gonna do the job. It's funny I went in to buy a Mossberg 590a1 and walked out with a 930 security, it's a fun gun, but I still kinda regret not getting the pump.

Yes and no. I couldn’t see spending the money for a ‘real’ one when I could get a Chinese Norinco for a little more than $200. Search for Century Arms PW87 on BudsGunshop or where ever you look.

There’s another manufacturer that makes them, too. I can’t remeber their name but they do the triple barrels also.

It's ironic. They make guns in China, but the Chinese generally aren't allowed to have them...

I hate laser sights, but they are a good addition to a HD shotgun.
Some reasons to use an 870 for HD; A) cheap, so not as much of a loss If It gets stolen. If it's in the safe, it's useless. B) If you do shoot someone in a defensive situation, the gun you used is going to get taken as evidence. You can always get another 870. C) Optics. If you shoot an intruder with a mall ninja SBR/silencer/hi cap mag, you are going to look much different to a judge/jury/press than you would If you used a pump 870. D) The sound of racking the action is a pretty effective deterrent even on the other side of closed, locked doors.

    Oh lord.

Wait, was the pretend scenario protecting your family from an intruder in your home or fighting off the gestapo?

OP I see you are in Bucks County. French Creek Outfitters http://www.frenchcreekoutfitters.com/ has an indoor pistol range on which they allow shotguns and isn't too far from you. When I worked in KoP we would go there over lunch and pop a few caps for fun. They also offer instruction, which I would definitely inquire about.

Do they rent guns? I just show my driver's license, sign a release, and pay, right?

LOL. If you rack it, it better go bang. Otherwise it's brandishing a weapon or something.

For fighting off the gestapo, I would leave the shotgun and bring out the Evo 3.
