I ended up selling my first car at a garage sale for much lower than I had on it because someone did that. I just wanted it gone, and I hadn't put enough thought into a response to be ready for that. And it was like 7:10 am or something, we'd pretty much just opened the door.

Now, the proper response is either 10% over what you listed at, or 'how much are you willing to pay?'

Then make your offer. I told you what I was asking, it's your job to counter, not mine to come up with a counter for you. Especially as the opener.

It's amazing how low some people will tell you though. Asking how low they go is to mainly see if it's worth my time bargaining with them. #1 rule is never to get attached though.
