Beyond the random chatter here now, I think you have been given a good amount of good info that will put you on track to making a decision on if you need/want to be a gun owner. Like I said and tell anyone who is thinking about self protection, take courses and be safe. Only you can make the call on if you should be an owner.

I love my Evo 3! Dual sticks make me smile.

Not sure whether I like the Evo or my pet project more...

No waiting period to purchase a firearm in PA.

When I lived in Bucks I bought stuff at Tanner's in Jamison. One of the best lgs I've dealt with.

    yep same here.

just because you get a concealed permit doesnt mean you HAVE to carry, just check your local state laws on notifying law enforcement when you get pulled over. Some states you have to tell them you have a concealed permit some you dont.

be careful with that, I think they have been trying to get that worked into law but havent gotten that approved yet. MD doesnt allow out of state concealed weapons permits and barely allows MD residents to get a concealed carry license.

The scenario would be the one and the same for either. Someone breaks into your house. You rack the slide. What just happened?

If someone is breaking into your house, gestapo or not, and you rack the slide they now know someone is armed. As mentioned the intruders are likely on drugs or even better chance looking for money to get more drugs. Odds are they are also armed. And now you become the single most important threat acquisition in their lives at that time. They also now know right where you are. You could take a chance that will shit their britches and run like you said. Me, I'm not betting my life on it. Never bet on what a cockroach will do, good chance you will loose that bet. And it is your life your betting with.

If you still don't have an 870 then I suggest you get a Wingmaster. The 870 Express sold at the big box stores for the last 30 years are the #1 gun that I see holding up a squad shooting skeet or sporting clays due to feeding jams. If you do go with the Express then I would do what most armorers do at Police Depts. with them.

    Install Police Trigger Group
    Upgrading Carrier Dog Spring
    Upgrading Sear Spring
    Upgrading Magazine Spring
    Install Non-MIM Extractor

Or just get the Police version to start with.

I love me some Saiga goodness!

But from a non range day point of view, I am proficient in the use of my handgun, 870 and AR platforms for "danger close" work, so adding another weapon system just isn't beneficial to me.

Wholly agreed. What I meant was more in reference to OP's topic. HD work, 1 gun. I know which of mine I'd go to first, can operate in the dark, and with my adrenal system cranked to 11.

@PennSilverTaco Whatever firearm you pick, learn how to use it and use it well. That's all that really matters. That "bump in the night" is not the time to try and remember where the safety is, etc. As recommended earlier, a police spec 870 isn't a bad choice. Well tested, and fairly intuitive to use (rack and shoot).

One of my old coworkers used to be a 'Nam tunnel rat. He maintained a Kabar and a flashlight is all you REALLY needed...

LOL. I’ve worked with TWO of them over the years. Good damned people, just a little...off.

You get exposed to cramped tunnels, peril and danger, the enemy, snakes, booby traps, all sort of gasses both natural and manmade, and the risk of tunnel collapses, ALL of which is generally in the dark. Yeah, I could see why that would make you a little twitchy. But I would guess you had to be a little off to volunteer in the first place...

Honestly, I have a few friends not much older than me that you wouldn't want to do that to after their time in the sandbox. A coworker of mine made it through Fallujah 2 / Phantom Fury and you don't wanna surprise him coming around corners

Combating a guerrilla insurgency in the jungle or in the city does things to you, I guess.
