Warped rotors at 5k miles?

Is it even possible to have warped brake rotors in a brand new Tacoma with less than 5000 miles on it? When slowing down from any speed faster than about 20 miles per hour, I'm getting pulsation. Not really pulsation in the steering wheel, more like in the entire truck.

I happen to be bringing it to the dealer tomorrow for the Toyota Care service, but just wondering if I'm being neurotic or if this is a common condition?

Yes probably warped, 2 of my Tundra did this in under 20k miles and they turned the rotors to fix which didn't. Service rep said Toyota will turn twice then replace if done under 36k warranty. Turning them never fixed the rotors and I ended up putting EBC rotors in both trucks and never had the problem again.

You are most likely feeing the drums being warped usually when it’s the rotors the steering wheel will shake but I suggest replacing them with something else. I had mine turned and then replaced and then again turned and replaced on the new set. Toyota’s rotors and drums in the tacomos at least are terrible I ended up replacing with Brembo replacements and never again

Took it to the dealer today for the 5k service. They claimed they couldn't reproduce the vibration, so I requested to go on a ride with the service manager. He felt it, and suggested it might be the rear drums. They're checking it out now as we speak. Hopefully I don't end up in this same situation, I can do the Brembo swap myself, but feel like I shouldn't need to on a car with 5k miles.

Same happened to me - most noticeable under light braking downhill but was present all the time and I could even hear a wha wha wha sound on the interstate. They replaced my drivers side drum no questions asked - one of 2 things they didn't give me a hassle about amongst a long list

They resurfaced my rear drums under warranty. Said it looked like they may have overheated at one point. Which is odd because I don't tow, ride my brakes, or drive in anything over 60 deg weather since new.

It might be the donuts in the snow though, since the traction control is constantly fighting the spin by applying the rear brakes?

Wish there were a way to actually turn that off. (not just turning off the stability control)

Anyway, Acton Toyota in MA is highly recommended. Great people, free food, office spaces, etc.

You can turn everything off. Just hold down the VSC off button for 3 seconds when stopped.

That always ticks me off....... I'm sure if it was not under warranty they would have suggested something for you to do and pay for ....

I'm pretty sure this is a quirk of Toyotas aggressive traction control systems and driving in snow or offroad. Like I said in my thread... Problem goes away after some hard braking runs from 70 to 0 mph 5-6 times.

I live in Alaska. My TCS is active quite a bit during winter.

If your problem comes right back do some research on “axle runout”.

It can happen if towing too heavy a load without a brake controller and doing some sudden stops. Rotors become overheated and warp. Riding the brakes on steep downhills will eventually do it also.
