    Any HG issues on the older Toyotas you've had? Any of the older engines that had aluminum heads on iron blocks (so all of them) were much more prone to HG failure. The all aluminum engines we have now are much better.

    The only one I've had any head gasket issues with was my '80 FJ40 when I overheated it- that big cast iron head is really heavy when you go to lift it off. :eek: The old F and 2F engines were pretty easy to work on though plus you had a lot of room in the engine compartment. The only unscheduled thing I can recall on my 3.4L Tacoma was one of the bearings, the tensioner maybe, I can't really remember now. It died a horrible death saving me at 188,000 miles when some kid hit me. I miss it. Next vehicle get will be a used 4Runner or Land Cruiser though, I want a Japanese made Toyota again.

    The reason the head gasket on the 4.0 liter engine is so expensive at the dealer as it is a time intensive job. You have to drop the oil pan and remove the entire front of the engine then the top then the head.

    Exactly. Labor time pays something like 18-19 hours to R&R both head gaskets on a 4.0L. Assuming the dealer is charging $150/hr, that's $2700 of the $3500 your friend paid.

    Sounds about average.

    It can be done without removing the upper oil pan. Done it a few times myself. ;)

    That's why its $3500 bucks,a major job too replace.Better just too put a new rebuild in for a few dollars more.
