I found this on a Honda forum, and haven’t looked at the spacing on my Taco Retrax, but this guy mounted a skewer mount in the metal in front of the canister on a Retrax.

If there’s room I may do this and one voodoo bar and tire trays.

That metal piece is just held on by 2 screws. I don’t know if that’s a good idea. I want to be able to carry RTT and 2 bikes on either side. Should be doable if I can find the right bike trays.

Yeah I was hoping it would work too!!! It's been cold here and I got it all installed and then got back from vacation and had a chance to test it, and then realized it wouldn't work like I expected.
    :annoyed:

I looked at the ones you are talking about. I don't think they will work. It does solve the clearance issue with the fork clamp. They need to be mounted flush to the bar, they don't mount that way since the bottom is curved to fit on a curved bar, the attachment is different and uses straps, and the holes are in the wrong place to retrofit and not use straps. Even if you could bolt them by reusing holes intended for straps, the two pieces don't fit together flush, so the voodoo bar will want to deflect and pull up to fill the gap. So I don't see how it could work. Maybe there some holes to mount them that I cant see in the instructions. It light be good to go look at them at REI. I looked at other trays like from Yakima and Thule and they have similar issues. The only things I found that are flat and would mount tight are the fork mounts. I do like the idea of not having to take off the wheel. The forks mount are also nice and probably the most stable when the car is bouncing around.

I agree I did look at the top piece of the retrax and it's not held on very well. Haven't looked to see if it could be reinforced. Also the metal is thin so it might be good to install a track and mount the forks to the track.

I went down and looked at it again just now. It does seem like it could hold some fork mounts as far as the beefiness of the metal. I like the idea of mounting a bracket with fork mounts better than direct mounting forks to it. But yeah only those two screws on the top.

I’m hell bound to mount trays to these. Shit that’s 90% why I bought these voodoo bars in the first place. Going to be really disappointed if I can’t figure something out. What about drilling a hole through the tray and bolting down? Can you add some more photos of how your holding them down on the bars currently. How are you attatched on the rear bar?

Drilling a hole through the tray could be an option but not very confident based on my experience so far. What I’m concerned about at least with my comfort level with that are:

—if you are only bolting down the tray, then there needs to be confidence with the small bolt that connects the front piece to the tray. The front piece if it’s independent and not directly bolted, but supporting the fork and the side forces of the bike, it seems to add to the flexing and shaking of the bike when the front part is also not directly bolted down. The two pieces end up flexing independently. I took a video last night to demonstrate how much side to side motion I’m talking about, but haven’t been able to get it loaded yet. Anyway, the cast metal piece on the front was intended to be directly attached. The back tray piece is light aluminum.

    — the voodoo bar material is not super thick. This is intentional and I get it, but it really lends itself to having two mounting my points that are farther apart, like with the fork mounts that they show on their website. Part of the flex issue when there is a single bolt mount is that even if it’s tight, the mount and the voodoo metal surrounding the bolt are both flexing a bit. Maybe a mounting plate or big ass washers would help this and make the connection stronger.

—if I was to get just the tray mounted with new holes through the tray, I’m concerned about the aluminum tray just smashing down and deflecting. In section it’s a complex shape and I think when you tightened down the bolt I’m not confident that it will ever get tight enough or what it will look like, or how the voodoo bar will suck up and deflect to receive it.

I’m going to play around with the bolting a bit more and also try installing the fork piece closer to the bar and see if that helps. Maybe drill some holes if that helps. Or maybe use the two smaller holes.

I like where you’re headed. I just talked to rocky mounts and they are acting like the mounting straps for the barelnuckle will actually fit around these bars. Sent them photos with measurements. I don’t know though. Either way, I think some bigger metal plates made into nuts to go underneath would do the trick. Should spread out the pressure and not let the bar to pull up when tightened.

Here’s an alternative from a Tundra forum. Looks like a bed rail mounted to the front of the Retrax.

I may explore this more with one Voodoo bar and tire trays.

I wonder if you fork mounted from that cover, would still clear the front crossbar...might actually work depending on the bike.

I’d be fine with this too...was thinking along those lines...you’re not coming in too hot with that Mav.

Okay, good news so far!!! First, I got the voodoo bar moved up! It’s now between the retrax tray. To do this, I got some button head bolts! It just fits in there. Looks and functions better! Yeeeeeesssss! :D:D:D:bananadance:

Next I got some thick steel (is real) channel material. Gonna cut it up tomorrow and paint it. Drill holes and add spacers and washers. I think it will work. Probably more elegant metal spacer could be made but this is will do and we’ll see. Hopefully will be fairly discrete once painted.

I think that’s too far forward to work nice with a RTT in between the bikes on the edge for me. Either way, I’d be skipping the trays completely with the front bar that far up there and go with a Hot Rod fork mount on the front bar and KB Voodoo rear tire tray on the back bar. Spacing should be right for that how you have it now!

Did the button head make for just enough clearence between the retrax canister?
