    Bullshit.

Brother in law has a 2006. Spent it's entire life in Danville CA. Pretty much a glorified grocery getter. Commuted to Oakland for a long time. Then once he started having kids it was relegated to third car status - Home Depot runs, that kind of thing. Nice truck. Very low miles.

Danvile is not near the ocean. Rarely went up to the mountains. No overspill of salt from eating potato chips or hard boiled eggs outside of the truck.

Frame was a rusted mess. Oh, and there are plenty of forum members in sunny California who've had rusted frames.

See, points are best made without any superlatives or embellishments....like "1st gen frames still look new here" or "19 3rd gens on the lot for over 60 days".

    You can do much better.....

Interesting. I owned my 2001, V6 in CA for 10 years. Never a spec of rust. Sacramento area. Frame still looked new.

On the other hand- I have seen frames on the east coast look completely rusted out in the same time frame.

I have seen ONE second gen that had a rusty frame, for sale at a local CarMax in Sacramento. It was the only one I had seen like that.

Being as objective as possible and having NO loyalty towards Toyota, I can tell you that my experience with my 17’ TRD OR 4x4 has been everything I expected it to be. Nothing short of amazing.

Truck is rock solid and purpose built. I can take this truck anywhere I need it to go. I actually enjoy driving again.

Very very happy with my purchase.

I really just feel like a lot of people are just miserable. They like to bitch and moan and blame others . They love to tell you how they would have designed it or how they wouldn't have done this or that . I like my 3rd gen as much as my 2nd. If not more . But I've also done more to my 3rd .

For some people such as myself, the grass is always greener. Having purchased my 3rd gen for its reliability, I was disappointed that my truck had what felt like a lot of details in the manufacturing process overlooked. I wouldn't have been as miserable with my purchase had the third gen not been 5x more expensive than a 1st gen. I truly didn't feel like I was getting 5x more truck, and so I sold my fancy new truck and got something that fits my lifestyle better.

I think a lot of these new 3rd gen buyers are younger, such as myself, and are too willing to jump into a 30-40k loan without really thinking about what they need in a truck. A 1st or 2nd gen would suit 95% of people just fine, but then we talk ourselves out of it because the interior is a lot nicer and the resale value is the same.

This happens to every car, every manufacturer. There is always that group that can not be happy with the product or finds ways to discredit.

I was at the Ford dealer working out a deal on a 2017 F-150. They had a 2015 4x4, and the blue 2017 4x4. I have wanted a blue Tacoma 4x4 since I first seen one. One reason or another I always bought other vehicles, better price on the Nissan, more room in the Ram, Better towing in the Ford etc etc. I asked the guy the best price he could give me on "that blue Toyota in the front of your lot." He went in the back room and came out "man with the rebates the Ford is the exact price." I told him to get the keys to the Toyota, "what are we waiting for." Every morning I open the garage door and it feels like I am 10 years old on Christmas morning with a blue Schwinn under the tree, banana seat, sissy bar, ape hangers and that super cool speedometer. I have owned many vehicles and bicycles and 7or8 motorbikes. 71 FJ 40, 98 Cherokee 5spd, 66 Mustang (2 of those, a tree fell on one) are some of my favorites, oh also I kick myself for letting my wife trade in her 2011 328I for under 10K. Anyway, I wouldn't trade the Blue Taco for any of those. I love this truck.

I do agree with you on the price . But you can't really blame any manufacturer and I'm not referring to any one person btw . Creature comforts and the fact that people will buy new vehicles no matter the price have driven prices through the roof in general. I think if these trucks had 1st gen prices we would hear less grumbling. For me I wouldn't pay astronomical prices for used 100k mile trucks. Thank god I can afford it .. the uncertainty of a used 4x4 is also a no go for me . Shoddy repairs or half repaired collisions can lead to premature failures. I do collision and I like knowing my vehicles from start to finish /sale.

Thanks, I do feel 44 is still young. And as a family vehicle, I would have bought a low mileage 2nd gen if I could have found a manual trans, and it wasn't so dam close in price to a new 3rd gen.

I'm not sure the actual numbers, but it would be interesting to see prices based on inflation and the required cost of the government mandated stuff.

Same here. The payments on a 10yr old 100k+ MT 2nd Gen would have been more than I am handing over on mine. Sure, my term is longer, but it fit the budget and I needed a vehicle.

The 2006 ACLB MTs were around $20k:
    https://www.google.com/search?q=200...1.69i57j0l2.8817j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

I was seeing used prices in the $16k to $17k region. Dealers were either not stocking used ones or were not negotiating much on price when I was looking. Private party had slightly better prices, but very little selection even hundreds of miles away.

    According to this: http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/

$20k in 2006 dollars is $24.3k now. So, in the end, peeps lost nothing but tax $$ on their Tacos!

Gov / EPA stuff costs a lot of money, but I actually like and prefer much of it. Some things are crappy, but I see a net benefit. I am really thankful that we are mostly past rubber bandy electronic throttles. DI maps agree a lot more with my foot. I also don't want to go back to carbs. Haha!

    Also, I just turned 45.

And. . . . hindsight, I should have bought a 1st Gen in 1996 instead of a Dodge Stratus. Talk about depreciation. I would probably still have that truck. Instead, I went through two other cars and a fucking Ural to get here with a 2017. That was a much bigger cost factor.

This isn't exactly how it works. The truck will eventually shift on its own regardless what gear you select manually other than if you select gear 1.

Sooo much better looking, those Toyo tires where POS’s I had to fill up one tire ever three days with air even after repeated visits to the tire store and dealer. They just wanted to put the same crappy tires on. No thanks pos’s The bigger tires should’ve came with it anyhow. That’s my only complaint is the crap-tastic pos tires that you get for a 36k truck. They’re worn out with 25k on them.

Other than that I agree with the OP’s original post, I have over 25k on my 17 sport.

Man, these Toyo A30s have 24581 and look like they have another 15k easy on them. Maybe I should do some burn outs etc...lol.
