I havent ran out......yet. But I have been damn close too many times. That little light doesnt do it for me.
Anyone have a mod to add a chime? I would like to use my seatbelt chime as the low fuel alert..... that would be sweet!

FYI: Shouldn't allow fuel to run that low. Not good for the fuel pump inside the tank. It is cooled by the fuel. When low, pump works harder & heats up.

That light does remind me of epic fail. Even my mom's RAV4 has a gas tank that lights up, not some dumb light.

Doesn't the fuel keep the pump from running too hot as well ? Pretty sure it's a good idea not to be on fumes too often , I just add gas when I get to a 1/4 tank , it doesn't cost you any more to keep a bit left in the tank .

My grandpa never let his gas tank get below half full. Of course, that was in the days when the bottom of your tank was probably full of water, rust, and other things. It's never a bad policy, however, to fill up at a quarter tank or so as it leaves you an emergency reserve.

Or Oregon, you can't fill your own tank here either. I've been out here 10 years but, being from Kansas, it still makes me feel like an idiot every time I have to let someone else pump my gas.

When the light comes on (2nd gens), it's not THAT low. You've got probably close to 50-60 miles left (3 gallons) of fuel in the tank. I have faith that Toyota designed things properly. Besides....when was the last time you read about people needing to replace fuel pumps ever on these trucks?

Besides that...I personally don't have time to run to the gas station all the time. When my light comes on, I get gas almost immediately. My Scangauge is 'more accurate' when I wait till the light comes on.

Even if you did have a 'chime' of some sort..... How would you want it to beep?

What I mean is..... the logistics of making a chime that would only beep at you once everytime you got in your truck versus beeped constantly as long as the light stayed on (probably drive you crazy till you reached a gas station).

Neat idea....but probably more difficult to do than its worth?

yep... i stop for gas somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2... never worry that way.

p.s. it's funny to call the light an epic fail... me thinks it's the driver...

Our trucks are brand new. There may not be any talk of replacing them right now, but 10 years in the future when mine is still going and the rest of you are having your pumps dropping like flies...

And I believe Chris4x4 figured out that with the size of our gas tanks, 4-5 gallons in the tank only equates to about 2-5 inches of fuel depth in the tank. The pump is a lil'bigger than that. While you don't have to worry about the truck dying in 15 minutes when the light comes on, just be nice to the vehicle and keep it above ¼ full.

You don't need a chime or buzzer. What you need is a recording that comes on "Hey Stupid Your Low on GAS"

Um mine already does give one chime the few times I have run that low. Do you want to change the point at which it beeps?......someone else tell me this isn't just my truck.

EDIT: After seartching around it seems some older ones do not have the chime, mine definately does have a chime with light the first time.

i think giving the gauges a quick scan, especially at start-up is a good safety habit. i do it all the time.

i never run out of fuel.
