MPG w/ 3" lift?

I found a 2001 Tacoma thats got everything I want on it. V6, 4wd, TRD, tow package, and a 3" lift. Right now I have an 04 5-lug thats in good shape but not nearly as capable offroad as I would like. I've hit a dead end with it and want something better to take to college.

Problem is my Dad thinks it won't get good gas mileage. I don't know what size tires are on it but I'm assuming from the pictures I've seen that they're 285s. What kind of gas mileage are most of you getting with this setup? I think if it's around 17 or 18 he'll go for it. My cousin has a 95 pickup (4wd xtra cab) with 33's and gets 12mpg and so thats what he thinks this one will get.

beauty of a truck. just like mine. the lift will not effect the MPG, the 285's will. Not dramatically, maybe 1-2 mpgs. You will still get good miles on a tank, 18-20 highway

 

I knew the tires are what effects it. Going from 205s to 235s on my 5-lug took me down about 2mpg. I just need a few guys who run this setup to give me a good average to tell him.

I'm really hoping he'll go for this. I'm heading up to Clemson next year which is about 3 1/2 hours from home. I told him I really want an automatic to take up there because I didn't want to have to fool with driving my 5-speed back and forth. My brothers turning 16 in july and is going to need something to drive when I go. I'm trying to convince my Dad to buy this truck for $6,800 and just let my brother have mine.

 

i got a V6 with 285-75s... i wish i could get as good as 17mpg...

if the tire tread is not aggressive, you should be close to 16 if not on the throttle too hard...

on my last job, i had a 72 mile daily commute... i would gas up every 3/4 tank which typically happened on Monday and Thursday...

on weekends, i would gas up on saturday and sometimes sunday depending on where i was goin on weekends...

on weekend wheeling trips, i would gas up 3 times over the 2 days...

 

dude i have a 98 5 speed with i think 32s and i just came back from college... surprised the hell out of me i got 23 miles a gallon! going over passes too!

 

I have a 00 with 31 10.5 15s with a three in lift on a four cylinder i tried knobbys and a non aggressive at tire and my mileage sucks especially since its automatic the lift creates more drag and kills your mileage

 

CUTigerFan, I am an hour north of you. Just put a lift on my wifes truck and put Nitto Terra Grapplers 285/75 R16 tires on stock rims. Made only about 2 MPG difference. Enjoy, its a perfect setup. Wished I would have done it sooner.

 

OK now I don't know what to think. Right now I get about 21mpg in my truck (could probably get better but if I can drive hard and get 21 I'm happy) I don't know if I could afford to put gas in a truck getting less than 17 or 18mpg. I want to be able to come home alot during the fall to hunt with my family and wouldn't be able to as often getting 15mpg (Clemson is about 125 miles from Aiken) At 17mpg it would cost me $40 every time I came home vs. about $30 in what I have now. I know thats not much to most of you but it adds up quick driving it every couple of weeks.

Anybody else running this setup that can throw in their advice/ mpg?

 

i got a 03 prerunner 2.4L with 3" lift front n back with 31" A/T and i get about 150 miles on a half tank sometimes 175 miles if i nurse the pedal.. i guess its good who knows

 

I have an 01 tacoma lifted with 33 12.5 Kl71's K&N Magnaflow exhaust and i get 16.5-18 on post and 20-21 on the freeway.

 

The one I'm looking at is a V6 with 4wd. I'm guessing the mileage might be a little worse. Then again at a certain size the 4cyl probably has a harder time turning the tires.

 

exactly.. the 2.4 strugglin to push to 31's it kinda sucks lol. ill be crusin on the highway and hit a nice big hill and have the cruise set at 70 and ill hit halfway up and itll down shift and just give her hell.. But what can ya do, if you want big tires and a lift you gotta compromise sometimes.. even if it adds up alot of $$ in the end =o

 

Get the truck. end of story

 

It would already be in the driveway if it was just up to me. I could actually sell my truck and pay for it right now. Problem is my parents say we got too good of a deal on my truck (only paid $5000 for it w/ 59000 miles) and my brothers coming right behind me with his hands out expecting somebody to drop some keys in them.

I guess we'll just see what happens. I just wish I could tell him it would get at least 17mpg.

 

I can get about 16-18. Depending on how I drive and how much highway driving I do. But I think thats prety good, seeing how stock i was getting barely 18.

Somedays are worse, and Ive gotten about 14, but that was driving real hard.
Just get the Truck man! And do some maintenance like switching all fluids to synthetic, and changing Fuel filter and Plugs and wires. New o2 sensors will help alot to, and cleaning your TB and MAF. But you should get way better MPG's If you do most of these.

 

This is what I want to hear. The way I figure it the trucks gonna be parked most of the time at Clemson. I should be able to get away with only getting 17mpg. Now to convince dear old dad... man it sucks being 17
