My tacoma is a 2010 reg cab,2x4, manual, when making a turn right or left, in 2nd gear, the engine lugs some, so I try to shift back to 1st, it is hard to get into first while rolling, I'm at a speed that is too low for 2nd. Is this normal?

I guess it depends on how slow you're going in the turns. Mine lugs sometimes in turns but I have larger than stock tires so it's expected. I would think that if you're around 15 mph or above there shouldn't be too much lugging. I don't think there are any sychros on 1st gear so you can't downshift to 1st unless you're stopped or very close to it.

how many miles u got? after about 2K my tranny loosened up a bit.

first and second are very far apart so you kinda need to revmatch to get it in smoothly

i usually just take turns that are up to 13 mph in first anyway...you get used to it lol

Hey old dad from another old dad,

Remember back in the old days with non synchronized first gear or even further back with no synchronizer on any gears when we had to double clutch to shift gears?

Does double clutching help getting it into first gear?

I'm curious because I'm considering getting a new regular cab 4x4 which only come in stick.
    Thanks,

I was thinking synchronizers but the more I think about the problem happening in turns, then maybe frame or body flex is causing the problem.
Maybe the flex is binding the shift mechanism?

That's a horse of a different color then because I was under the assumption that it only occurred while turning.
Could you try putting the trans in neutral, letting the clutch out, then depressing the clutch, and then trying to put it in first gear (double clutching)? That what we had to do in the old days when first gear didn't have synchronizers.

lol mine too...i dont' think it has anything to do with turning lol

you can double clutch but you still have to rev match. it goes away though after awhile...these trucks seem to take a really long time to break in.

So double clutch/speed matching helps. Sounds like a synchronizer problem. No good on Toyota if breaking in helps because breaking in means wear solves the problem. Modern vehicles shouldn't require breaking in.
Wonder if a lighter weight/synthetic gear oil would help?

Have found that mine won't lugg out so bad, if when starting to accelerate in 2nd after shifting from 1st, don't give it much throttle for a second or two or until the tach reads 1300 RPM or so. Works for me. Also I just rev it out to 2500 or so if I have to turn right, immediatly after taking off.
