Thanks for as great write-up. Got a good laugh at several points.

Looking back, there were a lot of good things to come out of that day but at the time, it was a bit stressful.

I already have tinnitus but I'm gonna start wearing some earplugs at the very least cause I got a scrap of burning metal in my ear grinding under Mike's truck haha

Man, I know im sensive to it..as i should be..but I wear Earplugs just to hammer on stuff haha I'll double up for some things with ear muffs and plugs.

 

I've had it since I was very young, but if I'm not hearing anything in particular I'm hearing ringing. I have a pretty decent sensitivity to sound though still, just my noise floor is kinda naturally high ya know?

 

that's fair. I would hate having a constant tone ringing. Make my job hard! haha

I used to be terrible about hearing protection, but my Dad was always good about it and in the last five years I've started to realize why. And now I've always got a pair of earplugs around. Had them in most of the shop day, which is why I kept saying "what?" to everyone as we were getting stuff done, hahahahahaha!

 

Glad you are doing it now. It is irreversible.

I find that after about 15mins I can hear almost as good with plugs as without them. Just really helps with the loud stuff.

 

I worked with a guy that had a 100 dB hearing loss from German measles as a child. He was a huge stickler for hearing protection for everyone else because he understood first hand what was really at risk.

In a noisy shop or any other environment where ear plugs are a good idea they really don't make it harder to hear things like people talking to you. They attenuate both loud noises and soft noises the same amount. While they make speech fainter they make all the noise masking that speech fainter as well. If you do a lot of work in noisy spaces make sure you find ear plugs that are comfortable to wear. Leave them in all the time you are in the shop. For IT folks those data centers are extremely loud as well, wear ear plugs.

On a similar note please, please, please do not try to mask annoying sounds in an environment (could be a shop, an office, the subway, airplane or walking down the street) by wearing open "ear bud" type headphones with music playing. You will be listening to the music way, way, way too loud and doing hearing damage. If you like to use music to mask distracting noises get isolating in ear buds (they are like an ear plug with a driver in them), closed headphones (meaning sealed rather than open drivers) or noise cancelling headphones. You can then mask the surrounding annoying noises with music played much more softly.

Noise isolation headphones. Like shure se215s.

Or noise canceling if the office itself isn't as loud.

 

Even a cheap set of IEMs does okay in an office setting. Hell I even use these ones in the garage so I don't destroy my nice IEMs.

haven't heard those, but me being the audio engineer..id but they don't sound as nice as the se215s so i wouldn't like them haha but I bet they are fine for most. Hell I'd rather have 315s or 415s. I went with the se215s because there were cheaper and at the time I was riding a 4wheeler all day. Put those in and wore ear muffs all day usually to get away from the 4wheeler exhaust. But i knew I'd likely kill them so didn't want to kill $400 in ears. But they lasted and I still have them.

 

64 Audio man, drop all the premade IEMs and come to the dark side. Only downside is they're the price of an LT kit. In all reality I hate using headphones or earbuds, I like my music loud/powerful and prefer an actual soundstage, hence why I use the cheap iems if I'm working. If I don't have loud tools going I use the garage stereo as it is far more preferable to headphones.

In the world of nice headphones and earbuds those are a downright bargain. Hard to get anything regarded as "good" for less than a couple hundred.

That said, I like speakers too. Though i like the HD650s. But i'll take the Genelecs I get to use at work any day.

You wanna talk about big speakers, we have a pair of 1273a Genelecs hahaha Not using them anymore but those things a huge. Need a big room to actually use them.

I don't like bluetooth..And i would never wear a headphone to protect my ears from saws or anything really very loud. But again..im kind of sensitive about that stuff..

 

64Audio is a brand, they make custom fit IEMs up to 12 drivers. Quite often they cost more than an LT kit though as they're a boutique audio item. I tend to listen to music very loudly and prefer to do so without the driver 2" from my eardrum, so I try to use actual stereo systems more often than headphones or earbuds.

 

well listening to music very loudly no matter what the medium is never that good..haha

 

It's very good for me, but terrible for my hearing.

 

That is a sad reality, I hope one day little African children can donate some good headphones to your cause.
