    Hey guys,

I've had my 17' SR5 Tacoma a year now and about 4-6 months ago I noticed a significant tire whine coming from what seemed to be the rear drivers side. Finally decided to take her in and get it checked out and they came back and said that a lot of people had actually been making the same complaint but it was a noise due to how the truck exhausts fuel or some weird (from what I thought) unrelated reasoning. A buddy of mine said maybe it was the drive train making the noise and another buddy said it could be the stock Toyo tires as they're "loud tires."

The noise is noticeable at lower City speeds, but It's most noticeable anywhere at and above 50 mph. Also, it's the most noticeable when I'm accelerating. If I let off the gas, it fades out pretty well. They said to bring it back in if the noise persists after swapping the passenger and driver side tires, but now it appears to be coming from the passenger side. I think it's just a loud tire but I'm a little surprised it'd already be making that noise at 15k miles.

I'm going to be throwing some more aggressive tires on it around 20k for 4 wheel driving but I just figured I'd get some other opinions on the matter. Maybe you've had the same experience and found a remedy.

    Thanks all,

Rear diff... common issue. Problem is there's too much tolerance in parts spacing .. not built properly at factory.

Do a "rear diff whine" search here in the 3rd gen forum. Your dealer likely already knows about it and is lying to you.

It is a known issue, but it is not a problem with the diff. It is a problem with the normal sounds (all diff make noise) being transmitted to the body and resonating.

Like the others it’s probably the rear diff whine.

Good news: There is a TSB for it.

Bad news: TSB is not meant for your truck. 2016-2017 TRD double cabs only. Taken my 2018 SR5 in 3 times now. No dice. You in da same boat as me my friend.

Also, it is just noise if it is the diff whine. Nothing to worry about. It can just be very annoying if it’s loud like mine.

Here's a video of what mine sounds like (had to upload it through streamable cause the file extension type isn't supported). You can hear it at 4 seconds and again at 7 (i'm feathering the gas during those times).

Its for double cab 2016-2017 Tacoma's with the bigger rear diff (TRDs). If you have short bed you get new leaf springs, foam for the rear A pillars, fram dynamic damper, and cab mount cushion (last two items go on rear cab mounts). Long beds get the same minus new leaf springs. My dealer says the fix quiets the noise by about 80% or more.

https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/new-tsb-whine-noise-from-rear-of-vehicle.532809/ - PDF of TSB in that thread.

I can handle the whine for now as I'm listening to music the majority of the time I'm driving but if there's any chance of the rear diff being compromised, I'd like it to be fixed. Although based on some replies and threads I've read, it's just sound resonating from moving parts.

Its just a resonating noise through the springs and into the cab. Nothing to do with the leak recall or anything. I can hear mine with the HD radio set to 30+ and over an 8mph range. Dealer gave me a quote of $312 for parts. I can get them from Camelback for about $225 so I may go that route eventually. Probably late spring or early summer.

If the OP has a DC with a Manual Trans the TSB should apply.

Canadians got it too, but it’s a different number for the TSB. It’s in the forums around here somewhere. I can try to find it once I’m back at my desk.

Yeah, that sounds like the rear diff whine. Mine barely does it when feathering. Its loudest on deceleration from 61 to 53.

You truly have no idea. Please read the TSB IN THE THREAD YOU LINKED. Also read the past few pages. The diff is fine.
