only applies 2012-2014. Mine is 2015. Good idea though.

    edit:
I ran 87 without issue for over 15,000 miles. Pretty sure the ping is the result of the timing dropping. But no idea what condition the computer is trying to compensate for when it drops the timing. It's so random. Not a constant issue. Has ran perfectly since Tuesday morning.

I plan to clean the fuel system and change the oil this weekend. Maybe next week I'll do spark plugs and check trans fluid.

Timing retarding is a result of pinging. There are knock sensors that will pull timing right away when they detect pre-ignition or detonation.

    yes, that, or...
some other sensor is unhappy and retarding timing is a way the computer can reduce power output to protect things from self destruction?

Ideas why it just abruptly started happening one day and been highly intermittent since?

Seems like a program issue should be predictable, like a yes or no, 1 or 0 sort of thing that i can cause on demand.

To explain it being so unpredictable, I feel like it has to be something dirty or sticky making it regularly on the verge of binding such that sometimes it doesn't do exactly what it's suppose to.
Or maybe a slightly loose or dirty wire connection that doesn't quite transmit correct signal/voltage once in a while.

Pinging is not good for an engine at all so it is pulling timing to save itself from excess cylinder pressure when detonation or pre-ignition is occurring.

When was the last time the plugs were changed? Have you thought about going a step colder in the range?

I'll give you the same advice I've been giving everyone lately. It's going to explode, so you should just sell it and buy my truck.

Had any serious lookers? How many “I’ll give you my 98 F-150 plus 3k boot” calls have you got? I was ready to start going ape shit on low ballers when I sold mine. Haha.

People are terrible. It's about to get worse too. I'm going to list it on Craigslist tonight, possibly eBay soon too.

Plugs were changed at 30k. No normal maintenance type thing has ever made a difference that I know of.
If it happened all the time I might try colder plugs. But it can go weeks or months sometimes without issue.
It ran great for about the first 25,000 miles. Ran fine again today as I hit the 60k mark. :notsure:

Very tempting. Even trade and you sell it before it blows up?

Alright gents. Got my official move date. I will be beginning my trek to Nashville on September 28th. Big question, is there any permits required to carry a loaded weapon in your vehicle in TN. It will stay in the vehicle and not on me.

Is TN still an open carry state? No permit needed if you carry in an obvious visible way?

That's one of the best websites in the whole worldwideweb!

What Dave and Zack said, be sure to check that website for all of the other states you plan to drive through! :quickdraw:

    LOL
Wife said no. She likes my truck and it stays.

Rolled her eyes when I suggested a Tundra 5.7 might fit in there if there ever is eventually a catastrophic failure on my 4.0.
    :burnrubber:

    Other topic...
still casually looking for a family friendly 4x4 to seat 6 people.
Kinda like how Lexus GX470 looks with small lift and plate bumpers.
But I'd want to put in a more modern stereo. How hard is it to mod stereo trim in one of those to fit aftermarket head unit? Looks like you can't just buy a fit kit off the shelf.

From my online research it states that concealed and open carry require permits. You can open carry without a permit??

No. You’ve gotta have a handgun carry permit. Open carry, concealed carry, handgun hidden in anal cavity, it all requires a Carry permit.

She'd like the leather heated seats, I promise. :D

As far as the stereo goes, what year model are you looking at? Anything is possible, but you might have to bring your wallet.

it is generally 05-08 i'm finding in my preferred price range.

Tough to balance family friendly, 3rd row seating, off-road capable, availability of cheap mods, low purchase price. It's that 3rd row seating that throws things off.
