Come on now. You don't have to hit yourself in the head with a hammer to know it will hurt. Direct observation and critical thinking are perfectly valid methods for determining if something will work for you. I have dogs that I like to take camping with me. They have to be able to get in the tent or truck bed with little or no assistance. Would be kinda stupid of me to spend $1500+ on a RTT only to find out later I can't hoist my 85-pound dog up into the tent. I'd consider getting one if I could keep the entrance low enough.

Now that I think about it, I think I could reconfigure existing setups and come up with something that would work for me and my dogs. Time to make some sketches.

When I had mine on the truck, my dogs would sleep under the shell. Although dogs make great heaters.

The state’s road info web site might be best up to date info.

I appreciate that, but I promise I did try that.

The Monterrey county site only lists a "coast road" and says only that it's impassible to 2wd as of 2010, but I thought I heard that there were status changes associated with the landslide a few years back.

The state parks site lists old coast "road and/or campground" as closed, but that is only like the last half mile of the road that passes through the state park (I think).

I found some kinda tourist landslide heads up thing that lists old coast as 'closed to through traffic' but a lot of roads were closed to through traffic during the landslide for the benefit of not clogging up valuable roads that the locals needed to get around, so I don't know if that corroborates the 'open till the last mile' theory or if it's outdated info now that the slide is cleaned up.

And then finally reviews on alltrails make mention of locked gates, but don't explicitly say whether those gates are closing off the main road of the copious private property adjacent.

Can't seem to find any mention of it on any caltrains site.

Point is, I've got a lot of little pieces of information and I'm not sure what to make of it all, so sure would love any first-hand knowledge

You’ll need to apply for a permit and also pay a fee. Wasn’t worth it last time I went down there. Not like the old days when no one gave a shit about the naturally occurring asbestos down there.
