Being a beach buggy isn’t all beach picture glam. Had a lot of corrosion on my blue sea, battery, and isolator for the winch. Been procrastinating on it till my rear switches stopped working. I had some time to take a look yesterday and found my electrical terminals were disintegrated. So time to address everything.. @Wheelspinner recommended a battery terminal cleaning spray and a terminal protectant. Toothbrushed everything with the cleaner and coated with the protectant. We’ll see how this holds up. Also come along way from my wiring a few years ago so felt better upgrading the terminals. While into it fixed my under hood lights running a new led strip and cleaning the pressure switch.

Out of curiosity, how long did it take for it to get that way?
What would be recommended maintenance /course of action to prevent such damage from happening? Just cleaning and coating connections every once in a while?

I’d say just about year and half. I rebuilt my blue sea sometime after returning home from a Canada trip with @JLink and @Wheelspinner. So it was fresh at that point. The funny thing is I think it corroded faster since getting a work truck and the buggy just sits on the driveway all week. I feel like if it was in use throughout the week it wouldn’t be so bad.. but really don’t know if that makes sense. For maintenance I’d say the battery terminal spray cleaner worked well. I’ll be watching how the protectant spray does..

Does anyone who knows electrical well know if this is true or I’m making it up. Would something with constantent draw (electrical energy) be a deterent to corrosion and if something sits with a very low to no draw become corrosive easier?

The problem with sitting is moisture. When you drive the truck everyday the parts reach an operating temperature and everything warms up. That mixed with the winds from moving regularly dry everything out. Just being parked the moisture just lingers and does it’s damage.

Looks like you caught that just in time before a major short out or possible fire. Nice work. Another good corrosion protectant is Corrosion Block. I used to get it at West Marine and use it on my boat which was in salt water.

I'd have to second this also, our box trucks all drive at least 25k miles a year depending on the route and get driven 8-10 hrs a day 5-6 days a week. We just had the lift gates stop work on the two 3 year old trucks within a week of each other. The crimp type connectors hadn't been heat shrunk or even wrapped in tape to protect them from the elements before they corroded. It's a lift gate so the only time it has current going thru it when the lift gate is in use and they survived completely unprotected for 3 years. Sitting unused and not moving is probably what does the damage.

So I am on to something with this theory. I knew my truck was looking worse off from sitting than it ever did from driving everyday. Also living across from the bay you can smell the salt in the air..

Constantly trying to battle rust. Spray painting the frame, leafs, undercarriage, etc. some aluminum on the truck became corrosive and powder coat flakes off like light bar and ditch lights.. It’s always something, noticed a few months ago my shackle flip was flaking off in big pieces due condensation getting under the POR 15 I put on them. I plan on removing my sliders very soon but actually scared to see what’s between the frame and slider mounting plate.. Just try my best to flush everything out with fresh water.

Yeah that’s my biggest fear. Usually power wash underneath as soon as I get home.

After giving the buggy a shower today thought I’d try something out. I saw a post online showing a guy washing his synthetic winch line in a bucket, thought that was a good idea and decided to give it a go. I wanted to use just water to be able to see any results.. Think the pics speak for themselves.

That is a @Subway4X4 cleaning method that I also use. Even after multiple cleanings my winch line will still turn my hands brown. Shit gets in between the fibers and stays there no matter how you clean it.

Nice wiring work. Only thing I can add is that moisture will still get past the shrink tube when you have multiple wires in a connector. Force some silicone caulk between the wires for a tad bit more protection.

Just follow the stock harness? I've never seen a post saying my wiring snagged something and was ripped out. Guess you could run it through the frame if you want to over do it. Either way some regular plastic conduit like stock over it should be fine. The fancy stuff you listed might be sexy but site says you have to buy 200ft.
