What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I have one for a 2000, it should be the same. One second.

 

I need to get around to making one. Ive been running without one for a year ish already

 

It is a must have if you an invertor to run tools, etc.

 

Sounds like replacing is the way to go. The question is how urgent is it? Here is my list of things I want to do to my truck:

- new plugs and wires
- Timing belt/water pump (they're still the originals with 180,xxx miles)
- Valve cover gaskets (both are leaking)
- Lower ball joints. (they are the originals, but only have a tiny bit of play)

and now add:
- new CV axels

So since time and funds are limited what order should I do these in?

 

my 95.5 has one

 

Weird, maybe a Canadian thing? Neither my 95 or my 96 have had one.

 

My 2000 has one. It quit working a couple years ago. The light on the dash saying it was low on fluid just stayed on even if the reservoir was full. Cut the wire to the sensor, dash light off, problem solved.

 

A question for all of you smart 1st gen owners...

Is there more than one OEM thremostat available for the 5VZFE? If you know, do you have part numbers? Would be much appreciated.

 

I think your should have had one though 2000-04 were what I thought came with them.

 

There is a cooler "TRD" one that came with the SC back in the day. I don't have a PN, is your thermo stuck open?

Thanks Tyler - I wasn't planning on getting around to it today.

Out of curiosity, where did you get that version of the e-FSM because it looks like a few other pages are needed to trace the system - I don't mind paying for one, it could be a cost / time savings in the future.

 

I'm not sure if it is either, lack of a jiggle valve in the pic makes me think no though, is OEM a requirement? Can't imagine URD is providing a bad part, why're you looking for a new one

 

So...how bad is it to drive on one rear passenger shock that isn't rebounding. I am pretty sure it has no gas in it. It isn't leaking oil but won't rebound. Icon has tried to sell me two shocks now that don't fit my truck.

 

You can do it - just take it easy because it'll bounce and reverberate more without the dampening from the shock. LT guys do it once in awhile when their shocks are getting serviced.

Edit: I had a poorly modded 4runner and one of the shocks fell off the axle and I kept driving that way until I sold it back in my younger days lol

 

You be fine, one of mine fell off on the Detour last Sept and I didn't replace it until a month or so ago haha. If it isn't leaking it still has oil and probably damping at least a little, although it'll cavitate really fast and damp like garbage hah.

 

All this talk about dual batteries have me thinking. I do plan doing a dual battery setup but I want the batteries separate. so the AUX battery doesn't get drained by the main. But I can push a button and charge the main or aux if I want and jump myself if needed. I do plan on running a fridge, air compressor, camp lights and so on. I do plan on worst case scenarios so if need be I can run my air compressor, so I can use air tools or charge batteries for electric ones.
