I'm not marrying them... just being chivalrous by opening the door and letting them walk ahead of me. :D

I thought diesel gate was that the ECU only ran the intended way while being tested. Must be more to it than a simple re-flash if they are storing them like this.

In most cases there was a power- or mpg loss when the ECU ran in the test mode. If VW ran a recall where they'd do an ECU flash that robbed 10 hp and 5 mpg, most customers wouldn't get the recall done.

I really don't like the idea of driverless vehicles. Too much can go wrong in an instant, and were supposed to rely on a live co-pilot who is probably dicking around on their phone while Jeeves is running over somebody.

" The NTSB found that Autopilot operated mostly as intended, but it “gave far more leeway to the driver to divert his attention to something other than driving,” which contributed to the crash."

As we all know, most people don’t read owners/operators manuals or software licenses. There are numerous warnings in both when you buy or lease a Tesla. When the operator ignores those warnings that dictate that they must stay alert and use it as a drivers aid you run into these issues. The product is not culpable, the operator is.

I hear that @Shelf Life but you know how many people get killed today because some knucklehead is dicking around on their phone and there's NO Jarvis watching the road? Thousands of Americans die on highways every year because people are pretty crap at driving. If we had robot cars, yes, people would still die and some of it would probably be some machine's fault... I just think the status quo isn't any better at all. In other words, if 80% of cars were autonomous and the fatality rate dropped by half, could we call that success? I know it's weird to think about, because maybe some of those people were killed by a robot and not a person, but I say yes.

That's a good point. A lot of people are dicking around on their phones anyway.

When a fatality is caused by an autonomous car, is the company charged with some form of involuntary manslaughter?

Maybe we should start lumping distracted driving in with DUI? We seem to come down awful hard on people who are impaired and make the decision to drive but it's a relative slap on the wrist for people who soberly make the choice to dick around on their phone instead of driving. They're both bad, the end result can be the same, why not treat them the same? :stirthepot:

When a firearm is used to kill someone, is the manufacturer charged with some form of involuntary manslaughter?
