Rust under plastic panel door frame

Heres the finished product. Could have filled in the pin holes and blended some more, but I just wanted to remove the rust, also its a bit dirty in this pic after driving for a few days. Today I decided to attack the seat mounting points with some rust converter aswell

 

Amazes me that you guys have rust in those spots

Damm it now I have to pull mine!!!
I see some rust stains but was thinking it was from my boots working in a machine shop.

 

My rockers are OK but my seat mounts are rusty as well although not nearly that bad. No idea how it happens.

 

This happened on mine but it wasn't quite as bad. It's from dragging in road salt in the winter, it gets really dirty and slushy there. I bought a rubber seal strip and put under the edge to keep the moisture out and will have to just monitor it and see how it's holding up.

 

Great job. I would bet you live near a beach or maybe road salt. Mine has been doing the same and only beach sand gets trapped in that area from my dog getting in and out. I have always thought that beach sand and humidity causes that seat post to rust.

 

@Newfiebruh what type of rust converter did you use for the seat post. I’m going to do that next.

 

OK... what is wrong with your guy's trucks that is causing that horrific rusting and what have you done to stop the problem causing the rusting??

You guys have rusted in seats. That should never happen without chronic moisture exposure. So something is wrong in the door OR the trucks have previously been flooded.

 

I used rust check rust converter. Its a Canadian company so I'm not sure if its available in the US. But any spray on should be good.

 

I'm guessing you live somewhere that's never seen snow..lol. Slushy snow mixed with salt from your boots will get caught in the door sill, slowly rusting it away under the plastics. And the salt is super attracted to bare metal, so if the paint of the seat mount wears away, its basically like a magnet for the salt. If you look at OP's, and my before pictures, you'll see the salt attached to it.

I’ve never let any of my trucks get like that.

Even then you still need a lot of moisture for that level of rust.

I keep my truck clean though. It’s detsiled regularly. I also wash my door jams (for that reason).

 

Must not be that harsh of a climate if you keep your trucks clean during the winter. You cant have hoses outside as they'll freeze and if you try and wash your truck its almost instant freezing all over the doors, which you then cant even open, well not without some nice prying. Also if you clean your truck in -20degrees Celsius weather, you're nuts lmao. Every car I've owned has this issue, and almost everyone I know with a 5 year old + car has it, very common.

 

I have washed my truck twice over the winter... use a high quality sealer to protect the paint.
Plus who says you have to leave a hose outside? Bring it out, use it on a non freezing day, put it back in the garage.
Also quarter car washes you can use anytime. Just dress warm and have on water proof jacket and pants.

We have snow that gets bad enough I have to use 4WD. It’s not a mild climate.

I just keep my trucks clean and I don’t slop snow everwhere and just leave it to melt and saturate the truck.

Are these basically skate board tape? I wouldn't care but the first time the wife or kid drags their leg across it I'd never hear the end of it.

 

I bought my truck like this..I’m just trying to rehab the problems I inherited.

It’s not as abrasive as skateboard grip tape. It’s got more of a rubbery feel and is thicker than grip tape. I’m really liking them.

 

I remember one time I had to bring the hose inside the house to let it thaw out, it was plugged with ice.
My wife went nuts. GET THAT OUT NOW! No not till I can wash my truck,it has to thaw out.

I went to run an errand, when I came home and walk inside to check on the hose. My wife had laid an electric blanket over it. LOL

 

I'm not saying that. I just think it takes great carelessness to let a truck get rusted like that.

I've owned 15 year old trucks in a salt belt. This has never happened to me.

If I slopped mud and snow in my truck and washed it maybe once a year... maybe it would look like that.
