It's the cost to repair vs. the vehicles value that determinenes whether or not it's totalled. Not the type of damage. Seeing a lot of misleading information here.

Vehicles a few years old already with frame damage will probably be totalled. They aren't worth enough. New truck... Probably going to get repaired.

Rebuilt/reconstructed title is what you get when you buy a totalled vehicle back from the insurance company.

i would check back with user....i have had them for over 45 years and my collision always would cover all parts required to bring it back to the level it was.....provided I had receipts for the upgrades.....i would also question the repair vs total....frame damage can devalue the car if repaired.....i would fight for a total....not repaired with new frame

Bingo. You need to collect depreciation up front because you definitely won’t be getting it’s true resell value IF you decide to ever sell it...it may sell for half the national/local value of an equivalent truck that has never been in an accident.

That's tough, sorry to hear. What car insurance do you have? Why will they not cover your aftermarket parts if you have receipts and/or pictures verifying their installed?

I've had multiple conversations with USAA and its the same thing up to 5k. I guess its time to get it in writing to save my booty when it does happen. Also I pay more than a lot of place bc they have always worked with my family and I in the past going beyond on payouts.

I hear those bumpers are tough to get in if the fitment isnt perfect? Bent frames sounds like it may cause bolt holes and whatnot to be slightly off?

    Don't expect a decent resell value, especially a trade-in.

I wrecked mine and had the whole front replaced, dealer said they would give me $24k...that was when trade-in value was $33-34k over a year ago.

Yeah, plan on keeping it forever OP.

After 10 years, the diminished value shouldnt make as much a difference?

Maybe. People are still weird about buying previously wrecked vehicles though, so the buyer pool is exponentially smaller.

My family owns Collision shops and I've grown up in it my whole life as long as a quality shop does the work its not a big deal. We are about to do the same thing to s new ecodiesel ram. Consider doing some kind of corrosion protection to the new frame before it just swapped. Also don't just pick the shop that's "approved" through your insurance basically they have an agreement with that shop since they send a lot of customers they get work done cheaper. Any legitimate shops has a life time warranty

It will affect it for the rest of its operating life...it will be depreciation + diminished value due to accident/Carfax.

Some shops could probably do a perfect job, some shops can screw up your vehicle too. It's just hit and miss no matter how good you think the shop is, IMO. Personally, I wouldn't buy a previously wrecked truck/car.
I can't imagine what the shop rate is for replacing a frame. Really surprised that it's not totaled.

I chose this repair shop because my dealership recommended them, I also checked the reviews and they were overall pretty good, just so happens they are also approved by my insurance company so it will all be under warranty. I think it comes down more to the person actually doing the work on your vehicle. They are replacing the frame with a brand new one along with everything that broke so hopefully they don't miss anything and get it all put back together correctly. I can only hope for the best. If I do notice anything down the line it should be covered. It does suck that the blue book value will diminish but it is what it is. I kept my 08' Tacoma for 8 years. I bought it brand new for 24k and sold it 8 years later with 75,000 miles on it for 21k Guess I won't be getting the same return on this one. I'll see when that time comes. I'm planning on keeping this one for about 10 years

As mentioned above go after the insurance for the depreciated value of the truck!! Maybe even get a trade in estimate or an appraisal, with/without carfax to prove to the insurance. In this case it’s currently likely over $5k depreciation.. don’t loose out on that!

My first Tacoma had steel bumpers,But with my new Tacoma I decided not too go that route, the factory bumpers take all the beating in an accident, and usually don't let your frame get bent.

I don't believe OP stated who was determined to be at fault. If OP was at fault, then they cannot claim diminished value.

The case will be going to arbitration since the other guy isn't even admitting to changing lanes and is claiming I crossed over the one lane and into his and hit him. I talked to the owner of the tire shop across from where it happened that has cameras, unfortunately none of them are pointed towards the street where it happened.

Do believe O.P was at fault, pulling into oncoming traffic, its your responsibility too make sure its clear, although like the O.P said people zoom around cars that are turning so fast you dont have time too react.

As soon as it's done, trade it in before it shows up on Carfax.
