Looks tight over the cab. I would be worried with flexing it could hit the cab. Maybe it's not as close as it looks in the photo, but it looks like it's only an inch or so above the cab.

 

Not an issue. I had a roof rack that came off the bed rack and I designed it to be 1" above the cab. Never hit ever.

Would rather it be that low anyways

The gap for this one looks a lot smaller than the prototype on the 3rd gen. I'm guessing that is @inv3ctiv3 truck. It looks like the antenna was shortend for clearance there.

That thing looks amazing. If it looks that good on a 1st gen...

He has voodoo fab top plates on the bed which lower it down some. That's why it's lower. I hope the 1st gen one is that low.

Yeah it looks pretty awesome. I'm the same. And I really want to see one. I think Brett will be the first one to have one and is in the first batch of 15. Hopefully they have test fitted one to figure out mounting.

I had offered to lend then a 1st gen for as long as they wanted and they seemed game to. But never made plans.

 

There are several issues that will have to be addressed to make it fit right on a fist gen. For one, the bed height is lower which will effect the cab height. My concern is the gap between the roof and the bottom of the overhang will be too high. Tighter is better. Then there is the difference in mounting to the bed rails. Firsty bed rails are very, very different from the newer gens. Their current solution for attaching to the bed rails wont work on a first gen bed.

I'm not sure how they plan on mounting it to 1st gens with out track system..

But they haven't failed yet and are very good engineers.

Yeah far as I can tell it's literally perfect for a solo person. Couple will be a bit tricky.

But yes to get in bed you primarily come up through the floor. One of my bigger reservations about it. The Drifter camper has a bigger sleeping area so isn't a problem but when you compare the build materials and quality it doesn't make sense that's it 1500 more. And it weights 100 lbs more.

Pretty sweet setup though still

 

1st gen Tacoma’s in Bozeman that would volunteer to be measured for this are like art galleries in Jackson, you couldn’t take two steps without stumbling into one. I think an aluminum ladder up to the rear zippered door takes care of all “access “ only through the bed issues. All that being said I’m waiting to see one mounted on a 1st gen before I place my order.

 

Agree, the price difference doesn't seen justified. Also, the drifter seems a bit awkward to me in other areas. They are heavier and the plain, large aluminum panels and the fact that the tent material is not taught bugs me.

Regarding bed organization... I don't think it would be an issue to have a clear space for stepping up to for standing up for access to the bed above.

 

Oh I know. There would be a line out the door I'm sure. I'd offered as I have a 3 models they would support and could leave them for extended periods of time.

Either way. I hope they try it out soon. Want to see one myself.

I'm not sure either. I think time will reveal the winner in the long run.

And I don't think it would be a problem. I know that is a cool part if the wildernest. Totally open with the bed separate. Still a cool topper.

It's under 200 lbs supposedly with cavan sides.

The Drifter topper is 340lbs...

 

Haven’t seen any pictures of the drifter with the sides opened up to see how they have configured their frame, only veiled references to somebody building a similar camper that’s mounted on a “lumber rack”. Unless Iggy’s design is way more ergonomic, he should be worrying about the fact that his closest competition has a two month lead getting to market.
