It is interesting seeing the car I drive everyday take an impact like that. Looks like we have a lot of airbag protection at least; like someone else pointed out, looks like we are the only one with leg/knee protection.

 

For 2016, Ford added the wheel/tire deflector bar to the rear of the wheel well on the SuperCab model, as they had already done on the new SuperCrew for model year 2015.

Such a big difference with just that stout little bar on both sides in front of the foot well.

The F150 is rated at 5 stars all around starting in 2016.

 

So was that the difference maker in side by side photo? That 2015 model looks like it gets destroyed vs. the 2016.

 

Ok what happen when you do a Body mount chop? Does that elevate the risk of injuries?

 

Yes. For the small overlap crash, the bar they added deflects the force of the wheel downward and somewhat under the floor, instead of it being pushed just rearward into the cab footwell and forward edge of the front door, causing the front door to move backward and into the back door.

Better for your feet and legs too I suppose!

 

I was extremely happy with how mine performed in a 35mph head on collision. So much so I went right out and bought the same truck!

 

I spent quite a bit of time awake last night thinking of these videos and what would happen to me if I was in a crash like that with the MR2.

 

I could not get over how much the Tacoma's beds moved in these crashes against the cab. I know frames are designed to collapse in a crash. I am thinking about the frame damage these trucks must have in less severe crashes. What may not look that bad with the sheet metal could be a whole different story underneath.

Yes, a slight impact could possibly total a Tacoma due to the fact that the high strength steel of the cab is "not repairable" in some cases.

Since that article first came out, I have read many threads about people who were in horrific accidents who walk away, and appreciate the design of the 3rd gen.

I'll take a totalled truck for less severe injuries 10/10 times. Seeing the wheel on the frontier drive into the cab made me really glad I got the taco, those knee airbags seem like they make a big difference.

Anyone else notice the alloy wheel on the Colorado totally shred? That was pretty wild lol.

 

Looks like the Tacoma made it out better than that Ford suv

 

Probably would be worse for sure, they have made advances in crash safety in newer vehicles as opposed to older vehicles. But it is not like people are going to give up their older nice rides, nor should they, just have to be a defensive driver as much as possible.


Edit, or are you taking about the semi crash test ?

Dealing with long term healing, rehabilitation, surgery and pain and maybe never coming back to full function after an accident (sometimes severe or not) is a lot worst than a bent frame and a totaled truck. It's one of the reasons I bought my truck - the safety rating was better than the Frontier.

The other car was driven by a 16 year old girl. She couldn't stop for the car in front of her. I think she was texting because she was still going at least 35 when she hit me. I never even saw her coming, I was rounding the corner at a four way and my view of her was obscured by the cars stopped at the stop sign. Everyone walked away with no injuries except she had a busted lip that matched the indent in her phone screen
