I just modded my factory chrome rear bumper by backing into a giant rock on a camping trip this weekend. (also tore up the 7 pin connector) no other damage, but I thought this might be a good time to make a change. I'm trying to find either an OEM black rear bumper or a reasonably priced, as in no more than an oem bumper.aftermarket rear bumper. Any photos, vendors and random comments appreciated.

If it's just the bumper cover that is bent or dented, the color matched OEM one from the dealer is in the $200 range, where as the chrome one is in the $400 range. The color matched one comes primed to paint. Body shop shouldn't be much more than $100 to paint it.

There is bracing underneath the bumper as well. Check to make sure that's not jacked up too. The piece that gives the bumper tongue weight support is $2XX if it is bent.

thanks, I looked under the rearend after it happened, the point of impact was really mostly on the 7 pin, apears none of the brackets were bent.. bad news is definately a dent in the chrome bumper(I've only called them bumper covers if they are plastic over a bumper reinforcement)

The rear bumper face is still sort of over a reinforcement. The piece that the bumper mounted hitch would mount to is the reinforcement so to speak. There are also stiffeners in the corners of the bumper.

Check out a micro-fiche if you have a chance and you'll see what I mean.

I was rear-ended and the bodyshop quoted just the bumper face... well, the reinforcement was also bent which cost an additional $2XX bucks.

My bumper got ruined by carrying pool acid in my bed with my undercover on.The jug tipped and spilled about 1/4 cup on the bed and some trickeled on the bumper killing my Chrome finish. When I called the dealer for a replacement they told me $465.00 plus tax for the chrome part only (no plastic foot step etc.). Whenasked about the painted ones (Sport) they told me that I needed the VIN # of a sport to find the stupid part#. I found the replacement bumper on Ebay for $282.00 pluse $30 shipping which was better than the dealer price and got it 3 days. The installation wasn't too bad however when I got rear ended last year the 7 Pin connection got cut off and they had to replace the whole hitch assembly as well as the bumper on mine and the body shop said that the hitch was around $1200.00 OEM.Maybe you could find the hitch aftermarket to fix the connector.Good Luck with it Bro.Here's the link for my bumper:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/05-0...025QQitemZ380230510724QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Once you get on his store you might find a Black one that fits your truck.

I did the same mod, but I used my neighbor's truck! The stock tin foil bumper folded up and pushed in the bedside and tail lamp, causing $3800 worth of damage.

A factory rear bumper was $465. I purchased one of Armortech Offroad's bumpers for $500 to my door if I remember correctly. This bumper is way more stout and has recovery points built in.

This 5th bumper down is mine. I had him put the trailer connector in the bumper so it did not get damaged, and had high lift notches put in.

I was "mildly" rear ended at a traffic light and think I only need the chrome part of the bumper (about $473 plus taxes). I'll take your hint and look again for other damage to supports.

    I have two questions.

    1. Is it easy to remove and re-use all of the plastic bits, like the step area, that are attached to the chrome part of the bumper?

    2. Is there a colour matched bumper to replace the chrome one? This damaged one is now rusting beyond the original impact area just due to the stresses placed on the chrome plating at the time of the impact. Its pretty thin plating.

    Thanks

All of the plastic comes of relatively easy. The only bugger is the end-caps on the top corners of the bumpers. You have to spin off a couple of nuts to remove, but the stud is radially supported by a channel in the plastic cap. Spray it good with PB or WD40 to help loosen it up.

You can get the colour mathed bumper from the dealer. It's almost 1/2 the price as the chrome bumper. You just have to get it sprayed, but you'll still be cheaper in the end than if you were to purchace the chrome one.

    Reply to Buck,

Thanks for the info on changing and colour-matching the rear bumper. I can make a much better decision now.

The trick is to actually use it when you are backing up

There was a chrome one on Craigslist here in Phoenix recently for cheap. I saw it on there and called a friend about it because she had jack knifed a trailer and messed up her bumper, but she had already replaced it. I don't see it now. I would have picked it up and shipped it to you.

I called the Toyota yard up in Sacramento. They want $650.00 for the whole bumper!!!!!!! That is just crazy IMO.

I have been thinking about replacing mine with the sport bumper and painting it white. I will let you know if you are iterested we can work something out to get it to you.

    Reply to Bretsuaz48,

Thanks for the offer, but I'm not in a rush to change my bumper. Just looking for the alternatives. Now I know they can be painted I might even get the dents removed and then paint it as is.
