Apples to oranges. The vehicle is actually making decisions in the case of autonomous operation. Not many firearms (if any) on the market capable of doing the same.

Autopilot is probably the wrong solution to this. It's way too easy to get a license. Maybe obtaining a driver's license should be like getting an equipment license from OSHA

Well, I'm not a lawyer, but I think in order to be charged with some kind of manslaughter you have to be 1) a person (and not a robot) and 2) caused someone's death by engaging in unlawful activity. In the case of a vehicular manslaughter (for example) you could be drunk or speeding, etc. So, since all the manufacturer did was make and sell you a car (both perfectly legal), I don't see how they're responsible. Barring some gross negligence or something, of course.

Nope but in a lot of cases like Sandy Hook they get burned in civil court

If it's able to fre itself the company should be held accountable for the flaw.

In autonomous vehicles that don't have a human interaction, the fault is the design of the product and not having multiple fail safes.

But we're talking self driving that doesn't have any human input, so every single decision was made by software.

Right, so as long as the software complied with any state or federal regulations (where applicable) I don't see what law was broken prior to the death of the person in the hypothetical you posited. If no laws were broken, it's just an accident. People kill each other on accident every day on public roads.

Even if somebody is paying attention, accidents can happen quicker than ones reaction time to stop it. I'd be real edgy in heavy traffic with a self driving car even though we trust our lives to auto pilots every day in the skies.

It'll be interesting to see how the Uber crash pans out. Ped wasn't in a crosswalk, the car was going over the speed limit and the sensors completely shit the bed, and the human backup wasn't paying attention.

You could argue that the software didn't comply, it hit a pedestrian. That's not legal. I'm not allowed to go and rundown jaywalkers whether they're in the right or wrong. Yes, accidents happen. From seeing the video, it does not appear to me that she darted out into the road. Odds are good that if the driver were paying attention that they would have picked up on something in the road.

An interesting thing about accidents is that they can almost always be traced back to a broken law. Part of the problem is that we, as a society, have made it relatively ok to break laws while driving. Don't believe me? Grab a lawnchair and go watch a 4 way stop intersection. Or drive the speed limit on the freeway and count the cars that pass you. There is no culture of cooperation when we get onto the road and the punishment for breaking the laws does not jive with the potential consequences.

When a human operator engages those automobile systems they are responsible for the actions of those systems as the vehicle is not a licensed operator.

It was my understanding that a human operator was in the vehicle, I’ll have to re-read it to confirm.

What I’ve gleaned is that a portion of the software was disabled by Uber without authorization which accompanied by the innatentive operator may have led to this situation. And like you, I’m interested to learn more. My concern is that we not know the truth simply because some may feel that their shareholders concerns are more important than that of the public.

My dad's company does a lot of third party testing of software. One of the guys there worked with a self driving car awhile ago. He said their software was, at that time, designed to hit the smallest object of an accident is unavoidable. If there was a person walking their kid in a stroller, bye baby.
