ive been an amsoil fan and user for a while now. I was planning on using it in my new to me ‘16 v6, but wanted to toss it out to the wolves first.

Anyone have a good reason this is a bad idea?

Amsoil is rated the best in many applications according to oil analysis.

I’ve always used Mobil 1 because it’s cheaper in a 5qt jug, but has become more expensive.

Apparently Penzoil Platinim is all the rage over at Bob Is The Oil Guy.

Other than the cost? Not really. It's not gonna hurt anything.

I would use Amsoil for diff fluid, transmission fluid, etc. because you don't ever want to skimp on something that is going to be in there for long service intervals.

For motor oil I usually just grab whatever 0w20 full synth is on sale. So far I have used Toyota OE brand, Castrol Edge, and I wouldn't hesitate to use Mobil 1 if I found it on sale.

Mobil 1 usually has $12 rebates off a Jug, hard to beat for the money.

Wow....seems to be a pretty huge consensus on the mobile 1.

    I actually didn’t expect that.

I’ll just be doing normal daily driving. No off road driving. (2wd). When trailer or cargo in back is usually will be light.

Seriously... I recall reading on bobistheoilguy that TGMOs viscosity index was higher than the basic mobil1.

I also recall reading that the better Mobil 1 oils are very decent.

I’m thinking of using Penn ultra Plat on next oil change, I know it’s $10/qt but most service places charge $75 for a synth oil change so it’s still cheaper doing it yourself.

The used oil analysis’ for this are incredible.

You should use synthetic especially if you’re going 10k oci.

I’d never go 10k miles on a cheap dino oil.

I don't think you can find 0w-20 in anything but Synthetic

I use Amsoil Signature Series in all our vehicles . I have an annual "membership" which costs $20 and you get 25% off anything you buy through their website. I am always amazed how quiet the engine gets after making the switch from factory oil to Amsoil.

There’s some, I see Castrol makes a few regular 0W20 oils

But yeah with an oil this thin a regular blend can shear down fast and it’s already thin.

They’re even making 0W16 for some applications, we can thank CAFE standards for that.

The only Castrol 0w-20 I've come across was Edge and Magnatec and those are Synthetic. I was reading about those super low viscosity oils, definitely a trend on the horizon.

You’re right, just read the website again and had to zoom in on the bottle. It’s odd, in the description I don’t think they even mention they’re a synthetic.

I read as much as I could for a solid month on this subject as I was going to use amsoil myself. It’s hard to get around factual knowledge and stuff put out there by the manufacturer to sway you. I found a few things from 3rd party testers and what I found is it’s not worth the money. Basically, all modern synthetics are so similar it’s hard to justify one Over the other as long as it’s a “name brand”. I stick with mobile one and it treats me just fine. I read on here about a guy going 100k ok his brand new vehicle without ever changing the oil as a personal test, changed the filter and topped it off every 10k and it ran like a top.

That sounds like a tall tale at 100k miles and topping off, but maybe. The only oil I’ve seen going 50k+ miles is with a remote filter, some big rigs use them since they use gallons of oil.

Modern oils really don’t break down they just get contaminated with dirt, exhaust, gas, etc and the TBN goes to 0 on a long enough time line. If you can filter out the contaminants, oils can go tens of thousands of miles and many years.

That’s why I only change oil for miles, not years. A lot of people will say change your oil every year regardless of miles, meaning if you only drive 500 miles per year still change your oil, I say bullshit. Oil sitting at the bottom of your oil pan doesn’t degrade, just like it doesn’t sitting in a bottle on the shelf.
