Do you have any documentation of failures from any of the vendors on this site? I feel like if it was so bad to gusset in that fashion, that it would be a more widespread problem.

If you apply force to both configurations, the gusset in the center of the tube will fail before the gusset offset the center of the tube. There is literally no more extra work in where you put them when youre making the part so why not just offset if it is a smarter, stronger option?

But, the chances of this failure happening on a rock slider is slim. They'll never see the force to cause them to fail when offroad.

It might be a good deal but you will definitely need to inspect that chassis with a fine-tooth-comb and a ball pin hammer. I find it extremely hard to believe that that chassis is not rotted out in the common places.

I owned a 96, then a 97 and now a 02. All three were one owner with records and solid chassis. The 96 had a blown motor, paid $500 for it, the 97 had 288k miles but was fine and paid $1600 for it, my 02 is now my DD and had 225k on it, blown trans and paid $400 for it. $900 trans and about $800 for misc crap to get it through inspection and it was good to go.

If all checks out, it’s a good deal.
Couple things to check for though. Frame rust is definitely a big one. Know the owner says all is good but definitely still check that out. See what maintenance has been done. That’s past it’s first timing belt interval so I’d make sure that’s been done. Lower ball joints are a big one on 3rd gens as well. Though I haven’t seen any failures with just that few miles. I’d also make sure it hasn’t been rolled back. That’s really not a lot of miles for a 97. I doubt there’s one on my local Craigslist with that little mileage, especially at that price. There’s a buyers guide on t4r (4runner forum) that I’ll get and link in here for you to check out too.

If you see enough force to cause that kind of failure you're doing it wrong.. or someone just T-boned the hell out of you and you have more important things to worry about it. For our use the center gusset is sufficient - however you are correct it is a superior design with the two side gussets.

I think @Mobtown Offroad likes to over-do things, and there is nothing wrong with that. Its kind of refreshing to see in an age where most manufacturers want to cut costs/corners wherever they can.
