Yep, that's where I keep my key.

Look on the bottom side of the center console lid, OP.

My 16 sport didn't come with a tailgate key. I just had one made at my dealer last week. They wanted $68 for it. Some bs about labor. Told her I could get a pop a lock for $20 more. She talked to her manager and came back with $16 (no labor charge).

Hawaii dealer wanted 70 bucks for a spare tailgate key when I bought the truck! They have to laser cut it, called my salesman and he got one for me for free..."

Here is what I found out 2016 Taco's build prior 12/20/2015 don't have the key code stored on the system (Mine)! after that you are in luck the dealer should be able to cut a Tailgate key just from your VIN number.
Found a new OEM cylinder w/ 2 keys for $56 & free shipping

Those of us with 2016’s with push button start paid extra for that feature, for the privilege of having an additional, rather bulky, key which only operates the tailgate. And I got just one of those keys. I keep it in the console, and got a Pop’n’Loc. I love my truck, but sometimes wonder what Toyota was thinking (or not thinking) about certain features ...

My 17 Limited with push start came with one key in addition to the ones in the fob. Selling dealer clueless as hell. Servicing dealer says they ordered one using the vin that’s been since October. Says it’s 250 bucks laser cut and is special order only and takes 2 weeks. Guess what? I’ve not seen it nor paid for it. Tired of asking. Ebay - Got two laser cut keys, new lock cylinder and took 15 minutes to change out. I’ll check for part number tomorrow and post. New key WILL NOT open drivers door or glove box! I use the keyless fob anyway!

Some went with the electric lock and tied it into the power lock wiring.

oops, just checked. On my 19 Limited, my salesman told me the single tailgate key was a different cut than the keys hidden in the fob. I decided to check for myself and found the 2 keys inside the fob have the same cut as the individual "tailgate" key handed to me. Should have checked myself, although my salesman was pretty knowledgeable, and owned a TRD Pro himself.

Necro post! When you found the new cylinder, was there anything specific you were looking for? I found a few OEM Toyota cylinders with keys but I'm not sure if they are interchangeable between doors and tailgates, or if you need a specific tailgate cylinder?

Well, I think whoever sold you the truck has that key. Some models have a separate key for the rear door. Most likely, the second key is universal for both the glove compartment and the back door. But I've never heard of such a thing, it's even a little strange for a used car. Even if the previous owner does not have a second key, then you can contact a locksmith. He'll definitely make a key under the lock if he doesn't open the tailgate. I had problems with the lock, the key was constantly stuck in the lock and I turned to a locksmith https://mylocallocksmithtx.com/my-local-locksmith-in-grapevine/, where they did everything perfectly for me.

I have 2 keys for the truck. One works with the tailgate. The other doesn't. They look identical but I guess the 2nd key is off enough that it won't open the tailgate.
