differential fluids?

My wife recently purchased a 2015 4dr short bed 4x4 6cyl TSS tacoma.... thats what she wanted so thats what she got- the dealer didn't have the books and info on it yet so I am clueless how much the front and rear differential takes in terms of fluid- anyone got that info or can point me in the right direction? Mobil 1 75-90 is what I am planning on doing- she has the auto transmission so not sure I want to mess with the transfer case but if I did would you put 75-90 in there also? And if so how many quarts does it take?

Transfer case is that same Mobil 1 its easy to do. Just under 6qts, for rear tc and front. Might as well do the u joints !

I would buy 7 quarts to be safe if changing all 3 gear boxes. I have a 4cyl 5-speed, though.
Started off with 6 quarts, but ended up buying 8. Doesn't hurt to have a little extra in case chaos should ensue while wheeling.

 

IIRC the manual needs a different type of oil for the transmission

 

Transmission (auto) uses 13 quarts of Toyota WS. Its completely sealed off and seperate from the transfer case.

Front diff = 1.6quarts
Transfer Case = 1.4 Quarts
Rear Diff = 3

As others have said, 75w90 in the front and rear diffs and tcase. Get a hand pump, especially for the front diff. If the tranny is an auto, there is a write up on here somewhere on how to do it but you could always have the dealer do it. I think the manual says 100k on the auto tranny but i would do sooner.

I did, in case there was a difference in the other drivetrain components. The transmission isn't what needs a refill per the OP.

Just did the front diff yesterday. It's 1.6 qts or until it starts to flow out. You don't need a hand pump for the front if you have a foot long tubing, invert the bottle outside of the LCA and run tubing through the LCA and into the fill hole - tip for adding the final .6 qts is remove .4 qts from full bottle and empty the .6qts into the diff (it will be less messy that way). ID for the drain bolt is 24mm; 18mm for the fill hole. You don't need a pump for the rear either. Don't remember if I used one for the transfer case though - I'm sure you don't. Used Supertech synthetic blend 75-90 for front and transfer case; Mobil 1 75-90 full synthetic for the rear diff.

 

Toyota recommends not changing the auto trans fluid and calls is something like "life service," meaning life of the part. I started to get some hard shifts and slips into 5th after some long/hard towing through mountains twice. Had the dealer change the fluid and it went away.

They recommend a full flush at 60K if vehicle meets severe service usage - towing, off-roading, idling (taxi), etc... And our trany's are not completely sealed; all auto trannys have vent tubes to allow for the expanding/contraction of ATF as it warms up. All fluids accumulate contaminants and lose their additive package as the miles pile on. We should be flushing the ATF out of our trannys by 100K if not at 60K, or you do a drain/refill every 30K. That's, if you value your tranny.

 

That was my perspective and the reason I took it in for new fluid, common sense told me it needed to be changed. Not every dealer had the "pump/machine" to perform the flush, so I had called many dealers and almost every one questioned me as to why I wanted it changed. Then they tried hard to discourage me from doing it and stated "fluid is the life of the trans and should never be changed, " but I demanded it be done anyways. I had it performed twice by separate dealers in different states and that was always the reaction/answer I got, so I assumed that was the standard procedure.

Dumb question - Is there a reason why Toyota started specifying LF 75W, part # 0888581080 gear oil for the 3rd Gen Tacoma transfer case versus 75-90W, which was used up until the 2015 model year?
