Rear locking diff

Is it true that all (base 4x4, not TRD models) 2nd gen tacomas have rear locking diff when in 4wd-lo? Heard it from a friend at work so I thought I'd ask the experts on here.

 

no. only trd models have the locker. otherwise...it's an open diff.

 

damn....... i was almost excited to only have to buy one locker in the future! lol
Does OX make a cable-drive locker that fits a taco? I don't want to shuck out all that money for a compressor.

 

i honestly dont know.....but i do know that the arb air lockers are badass......hard as hell to tear them up.....and they fit/install rather easily from what ive heard.

 

yea but pricey... i know that you get what you pay for but that would mean around $1,600- $1,900 after installation. I think i'm just gonna buy an ATV in a year or so....... lol

 

Why not install yourself ?? Or just get lock right for now, easy install still a locker. Takes two guys around 3 -4 hour to install one. (you should have a friend to hold things down while /bolting/unbolting)

 

TRD Offroad is the only package with the locking rear diff and ATRAC. And those two make it a monster, even in stock form.

Edit: This is 09+ only. Pre-09 still has the locker, but no ATRAC.

 

2009+ Non Offroad model Tacomas have the equivalent of front and rear limited slip diffs in 4H via their sophisticated traction control system. In 4L they have nothing, open at both ends. Or this...

well me and all my friends are ER nurses. We could probably take apart and put back together a human fairly easily, but i don't know about a differential, that shit's just complicated

 

Actually, compared to the human body it's pretty simple.

So what you're saying is that my base '09 4x4 has limited slip but only in 4hi, not 4lo (when you would most likely need to use it). That's crappy.....

And i'm still under warranty, so i don't wanna be playing with high-risk mods. But that mod does sound like a great one for people trying to make full use of what your taco already has under the hood!

Lockright installation is quite simple You just have to be careful and tighten all the bolts to specs after word. But otherwise ..

Its actually very easy there are some things that are no longer applicable like our bearings inside the carrier are fix set so you have to make sure you put spacers on the correct side, which is why you need to mark everything as you are removing.
It took me Saturday to do it and I had no problems with it or differential . if you scared just buy spare diff use that to install lock right and keep your factory one as spare in case things dont go your way.
EDIT: If you are nurse you should have no problems. Human body is much more complicated then this.

 

The TRD diffs are weaker, and not worth the hassle, IMO. Guys who use'em, break them.

 

...it's better than most 4WD vehicles out there that simply have open diffs no matter what.

Also, 4lo isn't necessarily when you're most likely to need limited slip. I would tackle sand, snow, and loose dirt in 4hi first before trying 4lo.

 

probably could snag a whole rear end for less than like, an arb or somethin, right?

 

I'm mostly tackling steep trails, rocks, and whatnot. Mostly stay in 4lo just to keep it safe and slow. I've never had a problem with any obsticle on the trail (just front clearance problems) with my current setup, but i'm ready to start taking on more challenging tasks that i would feel alot better taking on with lockers. And i don't really want to put permanent locks in because this is my primary vehicle and i do use it on the highway.
