Engine noise at start up?

Hey guys, I'm brand new on here and have a question regarding my 04 Tacoma. At first start up, if you don't let it idle for 30-60 seconds and begin to drive you will hear what sounds to be a low end knock. At first I was very very concerned, but its been over a year now. The problem has not gotten any worse(knock on wood). Just wondering if there is a common cause of this? I'm actually used to letting it warm up for a minute or so now. The truck is a 4wd 04 Access Cab with a 2.7L and 5spd manual.

Have you tried to pop the hood and pull the throttle cable? If it makes the noise when you rev the engine in your driveway you can eliminate transmission troubles.

 

When I had first heard the noise I actually gave it a lil rev while parked. The noise was still apparent, it only does it for a second or two, almost as if something internaly is not getting oil pressure rite away. I have always kept up with 3K oil changes and have seen no signs of any metal in the oil. I have even went as far as to purchase a oil plug with a magnet. No signs of any metal at all.....

 

I was hoping someone would say that. I have no choice but to run her till she dies anyhow. Hopefully thats much later than sooner.(lol)

 

Just wondering what oil filter do you use oem or aftermarket.

 

Fram...Would an OEM make a difference?

 

Next oil change try an oem they have a check valve in them to prevent oil from draining back to the oil pan frams don't have the valve it could make a difference.

 

Very good news / advice. I have no problem trying an oem. Im due for an oil change next week.

Ahhhh yes, this is exactly what I needed to hear....

 

its called piston slap,and toyota states this is normal...keeps them from paying for it if it is still under warranty.....

 

Yah, it still does it................Been doing it for 40+Thousand miles now, more apparent on colder days.
The good is that she runs like new with 130K on the clock. No smoke, no oil consumption just an annoying noise at start up.

 

My 2.7 started knocking at start up last winter. First time I almost thought it was a rod knock and almost pissed my pants as it was very pronounced, but it cleared right up and I figured maybe piston slap. Then I searched on here and found out it is common on this engine. Phew!

Like Snipes mentioned it seems to happen in cold weather. All summer not one knock at start up and then it returned this winter. Also seems to happen more when due for an oil change but this may just be a timing coincidence with the cold weather.

 

Just what I wanted to hear. I'm just over 50k and looking to get another 100k out of this truck. I have grown attached to it.

 

I actually added an oil pan heater that glues to the bottom of the oil pan and plugs into household voltage....lol
I had tried to find the the engine block coolant heater but the more I thought about it, it just made more sense to have the oil heated. Not to mention, could never find one for the 2.7..........
You can find the oil pan heaters on ebay for around $40 and are real easy to install. For the most part it elimintated the noise except for those days that the temps are in the low teens.

 

$40 isn't much at all, I will look into that. Thanks.
